What I love about it is the colours of the tapestry fabric. It was the centerpiece around which I decorated. The style is traditional, and easily replicated..but the fabric..I've never seen another like it.

Besides, The frame is shot. I've flipped it over myself a few years ago, removed the bottom cover and reinforced it from underneath. Due to the limited layout of my living room (both at this home and my prior home) it's always been the main seating, so has seen alot of use. I have a chaise and two chairs, just as old but still look and feel new.

The only store i hate is Art Van! Those sales people hound you like a yorkie with chicken in your pocket!

I used just such a paint a week before Christmas! It was a copper colored hammered texture Krylon paint. It would go great with your pulley!

I picked up a wrought iron plague thingy at a resale store. It has running horses with four hooks under them. As soon as I saw it I knew it would be perfect for my friend's horse barn to hang her halters and leads from. It was plain black. I sanded it and painted it with the paint, then a clear matte sealer. It looked great and goes perfect with all the old rusty tool decor stuff she has in her barn.

Love! The pulley was such an awesome gift. I vote for giving the candelabra a different finish to match the pulley.

Whoa! That looks fabulous! I absolutely love that! If you're looking to make it look a little more rustic, you could use regular stain to stain your rope to make it look more "used." That's just a thought as it's fresh in my mind because I had to use this technique for a scrapbook page I was doing.

I used lysol toilet bowl cleaner on a new tin tub to give it a patina look (I couldn't find a used one). I used it to set my Christmas tree in to give it a vintage look. I am going to try and use this technique on a light fixture in my bathroom to see what happens. The results can be unpredictable but it sure is fun to play with so if anyone wants to try it proceed with caution. You just apply it to metal and let it set for a few hours or overnight.

Does anyone know anything about hanging pendant lights? I need to know where to place them over my island, like in the middle or towards the back. Also, how high (or low) as to not have them interfere with people setting there. Are there any tutorials for this?

The pendant lights over your island is purely how you like it. We were asked that in the design center when they were still building our house. We decided to have them closer to the sitting edge of the island and not totally centered bc we also had recessed lighting in the kitchen and some of that overlapped onto the island. Just do what you think looks best. We actually never even put in our pendant lights bc we never found any we liked in the price range we were willing to pay. And the recessed lighting is more than enough light in there.

Good tip on the Lysol Toilet Bowl cleaner...I may have to try this! It must be slightly corrosive or something on the metal, huh?

I checked my pendant lights - and they are centered. As for height, the bottom of the pendant light rim sits 35" above the top of our island.

So, I did work on the candelabra and made it more rusty looking. I think it's looking much better. I still may add some more brown, but I'm letting it just sit for a while first, bc I may just leave it too.

When you say color the glass, what are you thinking...like a solid color or more of a transparent color? A sea-glass blue might be kinda interesting w/ the brown tones...hmmmm.

Funny you love that necklace holder bc I freakin' love it too - and it's just a piece of wood I spotted from afar in a trash pile and knew I had to have it! I didn't know what I was going to do w/ it for a long time, and then it hit me, and I can't tell you how convenient it is for jewelry bc you can see what you have. And funnily enough, people always comment on how much they love the piece...funny how the cheapest thing can be the most interesting to people, huh?!

I had to take the full picture on an angle to fit it in the pic, so it doesn't look centered on the wall, but it actually is centered.

How clever! I've been collecting bits of wood and stuff too, since there is a lot of construction going on in my neighborhood. So far I made a corkboard in my work room, and with the leftover I want to make an ironing table but haven't gotten around to it. Probably going to use the threaded pipes for the legs and make matching bookshelves too.

Ok, don't kill me Ann, so after all that work you did on the candelabra, I found this stuff called Rub N Buff. Do a search on Pinterest. Apparently it sticks to almost anything and gives a patina finish that looks more like real metal than spray paint. It's a wax type substance, you wipe it on, let it dry a bit, then buff it off the raised areas (or where ever you want) to give a two tone patina look.

Kristin, it says it works for door hinges! I think you said you spray painted all your hinges and it was a b*tch? Now I may buy some to try on my door knobs and hinges bc the spray paint method I was doing took forever with all the layers.

I ordered the 12 color sample pack so I will let you know. A lot of reviewers bought it esp for doorknobs so hopefully it will stay put. I know the sound of wax doesn't seem like it would stay. Or maybe spray a sealer on after ward. But that would still be less work than my method which was:

There are lots of techniques. Sometimes you are lucky enough to find a piece (door) that's just fine the way it is, but I am kind of weird about that. I feel like if I paint it, it feels new and clean to me.

First I sand it and paint it. I am not too picky about how even I get the paint. Sometimes I do one coat, sometimes I do two. Then I go over it lightly with a sander over any places that are higher than others and the edges. But you don't want to be even about that either. Just here and there. Then on this door, I used Valspar Black Glaze from Lowes. It's my favorite. You just rub it on the edges or places you want to look distressed, let it set a few minutes, then rub it off. You kind of rub it off and blend at the same time. It will come off the painted places pretty good and stick to any raw wood giving it a distressed look. Then I always give it a coat of clear sealer or furniture wax to seal it all up.

You can also use stain and various other products on the market to get a distressed look. The Old English (I think that's the name) Early American stain is pretty dark and gives a gray tone if it's gray or old barn wood look you're wanting. On the arrow below I used the Early American stain.

I like the Valspar because it cleans up with water! That's a big plus for me.

I would recommend doing a picture frame or two first. It will help you get used to a technique that you are comfortable with before you tackle a big project like a dresser or headboard. There are lots of paints that "claim" to stick to preexisting finishes, but I am always more comfortable doing some sanding first but depending on the color of your furniture now, you can take advantage of that for your distressing. There are just so many ways. I really like Ann Sloan Chalk Paint though. Love the finish it gives.

That's true. I wish that was something I knew how to do. They've trimmed everything! Even the doors! And I love herringbone floors too. Just not digging the furniture.

I finally got off my lazy behind and ordered my farm table, I put a deposit on it months ago but we have debating on what style and stain. Decided to go with a simple cross stand in creamy white and a darker walnut stain on the top. Now the debate is do we want benches for the seats (I say yes with two chairs at the ends).


Also investing in some new outlets for the home office and the Master Bedroom with built in USB ports. I am so tired of my dang phone and tablet taking up an entire outlet. I found some at Lowes and now I just need to get the electrician over here to install them.
