Ohhhh, Cacti, that must be the most interesting word to say, Cacti. First I have ever seen tilt pots and I like them. I am death to anything green or plantlike, I would love to grow Bonsai, but sadly there is little hope if I can't keep a simple fern or mint plant alive for more than 6 weeks, I don't think I have ever personally known a five year old plant.

Thanks... I do lose plants every now and then, so I'm always adding to it, or I get a new one to add... a work in progress.

The Semps in the basket in the first pic have been there about 5 years. The one Heuf that bloomed too! Now that one will die after blooming, but I'll grow the babies and may try planting the seeds. They either stay like that or rot and die.

Now my indoor plants (they're outside for the summer) will get leggy if they're not getting enough light, but then I just prune them back and replant the tops. Do you have a pic of yours?

I also started just using rain water exclusively. Even though I have a filter on my tap water, it still causes problems. Seems like after it rains, it's like the plants have drank a Red Bull or something!

I get mine from a place in California! Mountain Crest Gardens... love them! Most places here don't carry many varieties at all... and it's such a waste to drive around in search of.

All those plants (in the basket and clay pots) are hardy to zone 5. I have a small, unheated greenhouse but these stay out in the weather.

I've killed many plants too! This year I decided only to grow plants that do well for me. I've bought certain kinds and they just keep dying, so no more! I think a lot depends on the plant itself... I believe that many are sick when I buy them, although they look healthy. When I get a truly healthy plant to begin with, it will live!

Love your plants. My hen n chicks are pretty old, got them several years ago from my Dad and love it they bloom. I am a big flower garden freak......love the old fashion flowers that keep blooming year after year.

That's my prob - they get all LEGGY and I hate that look. I want them to stay short/squat/low. So perhaps I should try keeping closer to a window, right?

I can't find good variety here either, not at all. You've re-inspired me - so I'm going to order some either from the place you mention or from Simply Succulents (ebay is another good place).

The hardy semps I grow outside all year round. They stay low to the ground and multiply by offsets. Many Echeveria (soft succulents) look like semps when they're babies but are hardy only down to around 40 degrees F (some maybe more). They also tend to grow taller. I always look for adult plant pics online to see what the adult plant will look like. (Mainly bc I'm like 'What the heck is this plant doing? What am I doing wrong?' Lol) Then I see that it's supposed to grow like that, lol.

I'm trying a new (to me) hardy variety from MCG: Sempervivum Tectorum - Tectorum f/Isella: Large, green with rosy dark tips. Long stolons with up to 15 chicks per year. This is the main-stay for all succulent gardens. Robust and is the true houseleek, you can grow it on fence posts, roof-tops or in the garden. This variety is more tolerant of hot sun and drought than most of the succulents. Excellent choice for green roof and vertical wall projects.

And OMG, you enabler you! I went looking online and found Cactus Limon... great prices and super great variety (more indoor stuff). And I found some great deals on Ebay Thank you! Lol! I am def checking prices before buying on Ebay though.

One mistake I made was confusing the growing seasons (disaster!) on some types of indoor plants. But yes, the brightest window in the house is best. I have a light/pH/water tester I will be using diligently this go round. And a special light/lamp to get through the winter, as I have special windows that block UVA/UVB light (not plant friendly). I think a south/west window is brightest.

I ordered 13 plants for $19.99 on ebay on Monday . It will be a variety of semps, so hopefully they'll be good quality. The seller has great feedback, so we'll see.

I use a water tester, but it doesn't have pH - which one do you use, do you have an Amazon link or anything?

Btw, do you make your own succulent soil, do you just use regular, or do you buy something special? I might've used the wrong soil last time...hmmm.

Yes, I've seen these at Home Depot a lot - and they really do have nice groupings. I bought a couple once and they looked just awesome for quite awhile...then everything got...you guessed it....too leggy. Even though I had it outside in the desert sun! Darn it.
