So sorry that happened.

It really is aggravating that NO store (at least none I've ever been to) turns the card over to verify the signature and asks for ID. They are supposed to do that but I've never had one do it. So easy to steal a CC and go shopping..this is why it happens so much.

Last night my dd and her friend went shopping after work. She is 26 and should have been more careful but this is what happened. They were in Payless and she apparently set her purse down on one of the seats to try on some boots. She was looking at them and later found out someone had stolen her wallet out of her purse. They said she would have to go to them to file a report. She had credit cards, money and all her id in the wallet. 2 of the credit cards were on our accts, 1 old navy, and a discover she uses for emergency and help with legal fees dealing with her exhusband.
I called discover and cancelled but they had put 100 at a local market (suspect beer and cigarettes) and 65 at a video game store at the mall. Luckily no responsibility for fraud on the cards. She had 45 in cash and one of her cards they put another 65 at the same game store. She now has to get all the id and cards changed.
They did nto try to use the old navy or her target card we think it is because they thought only a store card.
My question is why did the stores not check for id? while they had her id, bet they did not look like her.

They did remember later, that a woman had walked up to them in payless asking a crazy question on what they would call the color of some shoes. We think they were distracting her so someone else could get the wallet.

Holidays is the biggest time for scamming and stealing. Payless should have cameras and they could help identify the person. Most of the time stores do not check ID. It does not benefit them one way or another. They still get their money and the victim of fraud usually gets their money back too. What they do worry about is fake cash, that is a business loss.

I forgot to mention....on the back of all my cards, instead of signing my name, I write in "CHECK ID"....that used to work super, when you had to hand over your card...but now, so many places have the little swipe machine out where you just swipe your own card...the clerk never touches the card, let alone check signatures on the back!!

I went to three malls this wkend. well actually I drove in and out of 2 of them cause they were crazy busy. For the first time I noticed a lot of police presence in the parking lots.

Cruisers driving up and down parking rows, and circling the malls. Humm I wonder if the incident rate of thefts has gone up?

This is horrible!! So sorry!! I hope whoever did this has a Merry Christmas with their conscience!! People can be so evil!

Online isn't any better, either.

Day before yesterday, my bank card was compromised and 4 charges totalling $2,000 were made to my card. Three were to TEXTALK in MOLNDAL (whatever that is) and one to a sporting goods store in Germany! Of course I called, but the bank had already shut down my card. They said they they tried to get 2-3k more after it had been shut down. I'm sure I'll need to file a police report, etc., but the bank is closed and I can't get anything resolved over the holidays.

So, I'm with you. Merry Christmas ... not!
