Worst Best job ever.

So I have a job working at a no-kill animal shelter now and it is the best job ever. I love helping animals find new homes. The worst part? All the freakin cute dogs I see! Last week their was a terrier puppy named pancake I wished I could take home, she was SO cute and cuddly! Then a couple days ago their was this sweet as can be yorkie mix barley 5 pounds and she just wanted to be held. Now today I saw this beautiful gold yorkie/border terrier mix. She is so pregnant so she went to a foster home but while she was at the shelter she just wanted to be loved so bad. She curled up next to me and gave me little kisses and I pet her big belly and could feel the babies moving inside! It was kinda cool. I started falling in love with her and was glad she left to a foster family because I am going to end up needing a bigger place if I keep seeing these cute dogs! Why are they all so cute and sweet! AHHH!

That does sound like a super job. I'm jealous.

I walk dogs for a rescue, and I used to get really attached to the animals. I think like anything else, you get used to see them coming and going. It really helps to know that they are all going to nice homes, so even if you don't get to see them, you can imagine them happy. I don't think I could work at a kill shelter.

I did this one time.....my heart couldnt take it....I only lasted less than a month....I took my own advise...."if you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" , so I dont go there. I even fostered an abused child one time for about 8 months...my mother almost had me committed for doing that, simply because my mother knew me better than I knew myself....I had a terrible time separating from that child when a very wealthy family adopted her.....she had a wonderful life ahead of her, with the financial means to get or do anything she wanted, and when they took her from me, and she held out her little arms and said, "mommie!", well I have NEVER gotten over that....so there are thing I just can not do in this life and fostering is one of them. All these rescue and foster people have my highest respect because it is such a heart breaking job.......

That's such a rewarding job but hard on the emotions. I volunteered at a no kill shelter and every time I went in I looked on the board to see who was adopted that week. At least you know they have a place until they find a home.
I fostered a pom pup rescue from a puppymill for the shelter and even though my DH boss ended up adopting her and giving her the best life I could never do it again. It breaks your heart to hand them over. I have so much respect for those who can foster all the time.

Well today I brought home a foster. Its a yorkie mix, her owner was trying to give her to our shelter but we are so full but the lady was on a time crunch so she said she was 'going to leave the dog on the side of the road'. Was she really? I dunno but I couldnt have lived with myself if we just sent her off. So I volunteered to foster her until we have space. She is a nice dog but I am at my limit at 2 in a 1 bedroom apt and she is a bit bigger than my guys so I think I will be ok saying goodbye to her, I might just be a little picky with who gets to adopt her

I admire you guy's that do the fostering and finding these beautiful dog's good home's I don't think I could do your job's because i would want to keep them all. You guy's do such amazing job's. at helping these babies find forever home's. Thank's to you all. You guy's are no.1 in my book.

I started an internship at a shelter and it is just the most rewarding thing I've EVER done in my whole life! Seriously! I love it so much. I had kind of "lost" myself for a while and I didn't know where I was going, but in the short time I've been at the shelter I feel like I found my calling, I love microchipping, I love giving vaccines, I love holding the babies and comforting them while I draw blood...all because I know I'm helping them.

What I don't love is that my shelter does euthanasia. They told me I don't have to partake in the classes or be certified, unless I felt comfortable. Well I feel like I HAVE to get over being uncomfortable, because I know in my heart it's for the better of the animal, most of the time, but sometimes we flat out don't have room for every stray/owner surrender in the county. So we do euthanize, and I hate it. A couple weeks ago 3 littermate puppies that were in 1 kennel together, all caught parvo. They had to be put down, and then they pulled 12 more (almost EVERY puppy in the whole facility) to be EU'd...I cried and cried and finally went home early.

My favorite dog in the shelter is heartworm positive and has been here for months, so his time is probably coming...I want to adopt him so badly, or pay for his heartworm meds, but I can't. It's heartbreaking. I'm so afraid I'll show up to work and his kennel will be empty. It's a hard job...but it's still my favorite job.
