Anyone who has had chicken pox can get 'shingles' but it it usually in older people. I got the shot about six months ago so I won't get it, I have seen two friends suffer for over a year. The pain is debilitating.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Just seeing this, Betty. So glad it was not Shingles. Been there, done that = not FUN! I suspected it was not Shingles, as they do not go completely around one's body; only on one side. Hubby and I had them together about 10 years ago. Shingles are not contagious, but can be brought on by being around someone with active chicken pox, or even prolonged stress. Mine was a mild case on hip & thigh; but he suffered the blistering. They do start out with severe itching, progressing to pain, and the affected nerves can be painful for up to several years. For instance, I could tell when the weather was going to change, because that area became very sensitive again. Hoping you find out what the allergy is, so this does not repeat!

| This is what I found just now when I looked it up. Can You Get Shingles If You Have Not Had Chicken Pox? Best Answer - Chosen by Asker No you can't. The virus that causes shingles is called varicella zoster. This is the virus that causes chickenpox. After having chickenpox, the varicella virus lies dormant in the spinal cord. If the virus reactivates in the spinal cord it causes shingles. This tends to occur in older people and arises as a result of stress or a lowered immunity. However someone who has not had chickenpox can catch chickenpox from direct contact with the fluid from shingles blisters. People who get shingles and don't remember having had chickenpox previously would have had a very mild case as a child wtih one or two spots.

| Thanks again to all of you, it seems there are a lot of people having shingles these days and i really did not know much about them, so i thought i must be getting them to. I feel very blessed that it wasn't,i hate pain I don't remember having chicken pox, but i do remember my Mom saying that i did have them..in my "ERA" most children did, along with measles, whooping cough and all of the other childhood disease, i guess there was not vaccines for everything like there is today..

| Betty, I am so glad it isn't shingles! I think I will be asking my doctor if he thinks I should get the shot since I do know I had chicken pox as a child. Hope your allergic reaction was from something outside of your environment...like maybe from a visit to a store. Wishes for your shot and meds to take quick effect. Hugs, Dyan |

| Allergic to chocolate!? That would be worse than shingles for me! Maybe it is the nuts? Peanuts are a really common allergy...
