| Does anyone have a Maltese? I have been thinking of getting one. I have a few breeders and I am trying to narrow them down but I have done all my research on Maltese and they sound like a good breed. But do they have hair problems like yorkies? Can you keep their hair short? Do they have dry skin problems and do they have risks of health I should do about? Out of all the information I have it really does have much to answer my questions.

| My mother-in-law breeds them. I am no expert, but they are pretty much a white Yorkie....except.....and PLEASE DON'T HATE ME PEOPLE....they are calmer in most cases. Yorkie pups are crazy with a capital "C". However, once they calm down, they are THE GREATEST!!!! Maltese are a very nice breed if you ask me. |

| I have never had a Maltese, but from what I hear, they are great! Good luck! I hope someone on here can help you out a little bit more than I can. |

| I have a maltese. They are wonderful! Calm, silly and sweet. But their coat requires more care. They can have skin problems, luxating patellas etc just as a yorkie. Last edited by chloeandj; 11-23-2005 at 02:27 PM. |

| Thanks, chloeandj. I was just wondering from the picture their hair looks pretty thick. And made me think they had skin problems.

| Like a Yorkie....you'll see some with a thick coat and some with a thin coat. |

| Maltese I have had three..I tried so hard to enjoy them, but I hate a white coat to care for..the face stains did me in, plus mine got green feet from the wet grass. I found them calm, but they barked more then my Yorks. My friend had 2,.a lovely champion male and female...sweet, loving dogs, but their faces were always orange..at least if a Yorkie has a stained face it is gold!! |

| They get the tear stains pretty bad. There are products that help with the staining. Talk to someone who has a Maltese and save yourself a lot of money on the products that DON'T work. Their feet turn orangish-brown if they lick them. There is "whitening" shampoos to use on them also. If you want a half decent long coat, you will have to do a lot of brushing. Like any white dog, it will take a lot of maintenance if you plan on them spending time outside. They have no idea that they are white and are supposed to stay that way |

| Yes some people have to battle stains terribly. We have been lucky with Chloe in that area, stains have never been an issue with her. But she does have allergies and sensitive skin and her pink skin has sunburned on her part too. Some malts don't mat as much as others, coats can be thin or thick and even curly (which you do not want). We live in a rural area as well and I let Chloe be her snoopy self and this is usually what she looks like in the winter after coming in from outside. But she dries out and looks like her old self again. If we cut the grass and she walks through it it will stain her feet. The last pic is of my mom's 2 malts and Chloe together. Staining has been an on and off thing with the two of them. Good maltese sites for info are maltesetalk.com, spoiledmaltese.com, malteseonly.com |
