This is very scary and I feel for the victims. Our lakes in KS have been having a blue green algea problem due to the heat and lack of rain. It can also cause health problems. Dispite warnings, people are still letting their dogs go in the water and there have been two dog deaths from it and possibly a third. When I think about all the microscopic organisms in lake water it's all I can do to make myself go out on a boat, much less get in.

I do rinse my sinuses, and really feel it helps with allergies, but I never do it without adding salt first.

My dd has one of the pots that is for flushing the sinuses .. I hope that ends NOW!!!

We live in an area that has a lot of lakes... I think they are brackish (is that the right word?) because we are so close to the ocean/gulf. We have gators in the lake out back... now I think I rather have the gator then worry about being tempted to swim or letting the dogs swim!!!

There is another house we were looking to purchase that was on a beautiful lake with a beach... people do swim in it. My friend told me that in summer it was very dangerous because of some bacteria or dangerous... but I don't think he even knew about this one... gross .. and sooooo sad for the loss of life!

I don't know why we have never heard of this before? Is it because of the lack of rain in some areas?

They're saying it is bc of the extreme prolonged heat and lower water table this year. That that's the environment that grows these buggers. They're saying the life cycle of these buggers is from June through September. From what I read, they were discovered in the 1960's but have not showed their heads much here in the USA. They love extreme, prolonged heat.

Husband says he heard you are to do this w distilled water to be safe.

I'm w you, I couldn't pour water up my nose. You're supposed to tip your head the other way then, and the water comes out the other side of your nose - yuck!

This reminds me of this one Tales from the Crypt I watched when I was a kid. These 4 teenagers went swimming in a lake and there was this blob thing that lived on the lake and it ate them! Then after all four of them died, the camera pans over to a sign hidden by overgrowth that says No Swimming.

Being a Steven King fan and older and wiser than you, that's from his movie Creepshow2. It had three different stories the Raft was one of them.

The Raft
Deke meets his brutal demise in "The Raft"...Four college students, Deke, Laverne, Randy, and Rachel decide to go swimming in a desolate lake far away from civilization. As they make their way to a wooden raft in the middle of the lake, they realize that they are being terrorized by floating black blob when it grabs a hold of Rachel and consumes her. The frightened students begin to panic and mourn the loss of Rachel. Deke then contemplates quickly swimming to shore so he can bring back help as he is a fast swimmer. But before he can carry out his plan, the blob seeps through the raft's cracks and pulls Deke through the raft, killing him in the process. Randy and Laverne manage to evade the creature long enough to where it gives up trying to grab them from under the raft as well. Randy and Laverne spend the entire night on the raft, afraid to fall asleep in fear that the creature will attack them while they sleep. The Original Creep Show was even better! King is an environmentalist and many of his stories remind us to be careful of what we're doing to the environment.

The netti pot I used did not require me to leave water in my nose. I tilted my head forward about 45 degrees and to the side. I poured water in the nostril and it ran through th and out the other side. It felt really weird the first few times I did it but the relief was worth it.

Yeah, but isn't there a hole up there that leads directly to the brain?

Oh never mind, I'm passing rumors, there's a bone, but apparently, certain drugs can cause holes in the bone.

Oh yeah! I was just a kid when I watched that. LOL my dad let us watch stuff like that and ALL of Arnold Schwarzeneger(?) movies.

Yuck! Ugh, creeps me out.

The deal with neti pots, which I'm not coordinated enough to use and have tried to use numerous times without choking myself unsuccessfully, is that you are always supposed to use distilled water with them, NEVER tap water. It states right on the box to only use distilled water, but far too many people disregard this.

I am sure there would be some way for bacteria to reach the brain through the nose. Not sure though.

I always used distilled water with mine too and had to make a conscious effort to breath through my mouth. The feeling is so weird and occasionally I did have it run into my throat. Yuck!
Shoot, I was so miserable and limited on the medication I could take due to pregnancy, I was about willing to try anything.

Lets all put this in perspective. How many people swim every year? In 9 year (2001-2010) there have been 32 known cases in the US. And only 121 cases since 1937-2007. This is not something I would worry about people! There are soooo many other things that have a MUCH higher contraction rate than this!

Im still glad I don't swim in ponds and most lakes though! They gross me out anyways. I mainly swim in pools and thats it! LOL
