To many NO's make an unhappy puppy!

I don't normally start/respond to this type of thread, I guess I'm really bummed out about my leg and just need to gripe to someone about something, so here goes.....

In my experience it is perfectly normal for a puppy to:

1) gnaw on fingers, hands, toes, etc. -- I have raised several litters of pups and happen to LOVE LOVE LOVE this phase. Most of my pups have teethed on my various available body parts and my adults aren't chewers or biters.

2) zoom around the house like the energizer bunny on speed -- I stole that phrase from someone 'cause it made me smile.

3) have house training accidents -- you know, SH*T happens, it just does and as BonBon mentioned in another thread, it stinks! (love you Bonny)

4) puppies, especially Yorkie pups ae curious - and determined to get to what interests them

5) untrained pups WILL zoom out the door if they get the chance -- that is until they are trained to sit politely until they are invided out

6) pups aren't born knowing how to walk on a leash -- it takes lots of love, patience and good humored training to acquire a dog that will walk politely

7) one of the ways pups learn about their environment is by taste -- they will sample anything that interests them and especially things that have their owner's scent on it, including pills that have been dropped, flowers, electrical cords

I guess I have ranted enough. I love pups and all of their silliness. It is a shame that those who don't like the "puppy phase" don't just skip it and adopt an adult or perhaps settle for a pet rock. There are way too many rescues and dogs in shelters. Or perhaps if you are lucky, you could even nab a retired breeding dog or bitch from a REPUTABLE breeder.

I agree. Aside from keeping them safe you have to them be them. I can't count how many times in a day Princess has me laughing over her little antics. You can't put them through boot camp, make the training fun & they'll eat it up-when it's age appropriate.

Thanks for your post. I never understand why people dont realizer research o the things their pup is going to do during pup stage and take that into consideration before getting one. It is sad to see someone on here so unhappy with their pup for normal things they do. That puppy stage is so short also. Then they go on to be more laid back adult dogs or at least mine did.

I fully agree! But, as we read on here, many people don't seem to do much research before getting a puppy.

I agree, totally! I also love the puppy stage. I have had shoes eaten, cords eaten, blankets chewed through- its part of the fun- my family still laughs so hard when we think about the poodle we had when I was a kid who ate the fingers and toes off all of my dolls- just the fingers and toes, nothing else! And you know who got yelled at for that?! ME! for leaving the dolls on the floor, never the dog.

My babies are all grown up now and well behaved now and they still have zoomies- I love when they race around the house and knock things over in all their fun!

If I wanted an inanimate object, I would have bought a stuffed yorkie.

I LOVE #2...not 'number 2' literally, but your #2 below. Energizer bunny. OMG that IS Jazi. She does it outside too. Has to get 3 or 4 sprints in, in a circle around the tree before veering off to the open door. Once, she found herself head first into a solar yard light. She got a little woozie... but that cleared up. lol

Great rant!

I love everything about puppies - their curiousity, their innocence, their eagerness, their trust in us and especially their wonderful puppy breath (I wish someone would bottle that smell).

Dang it, Cindy! You've set off puppy fever in me.

But you're so right. I'm always amazed at how unprepared - how unaccepting - so many people are about puppies. They aren't pet rocks. They do take time, work, discipline and love. Yeah...many should just stick with the pet rock.

I agree!!! I love love love the puppy stage...I've had thousands of dollars worth of shoes chewed, phone cord, furniture, purses...I've stepprd in poop and pee, cleaned poop and pee off them ...zooming around the house like the energizer bunny on speed LOL..but I love it and wouldn't change a thing, well maybe my favorite shoes LOL that they chewed.

I'm so thankful puppies are such wild things, had I never got Princess my house would not be so organized & pre-baby proofed for any little ones that come over. She's really kept me in check, lol, guess she's been training me.

Cindy SO glad you posted this. I was actually thinking the same thing this morning when i read a specific thread on here.

I actually MISS the days of when Pasquale was a puppy..and did puppy things!!

*My socks never go missing anymore.
*The toilet paper NEVER gets unraveled throughout the house anymore.
*That little bark coming from on top of the stairs, cause "someone" made it up the stairs but couldnt figure out his way back down and now needed mommy to come get him.
* The little puppy bites on my feet when someone was needing their mommy's attention.

At one time in my life I had a siberian husky that ate the gas line completely off the water heater....i went 4 days without water...and even then i still didnt care!!

People need to realize that life can be way more difficult than these petty little things. As long as they are safe...enjoy them while they are young!!

As a observer of the human condition I see many people who are too busy to take care of their own children much less have a dog. Yet they insist on having children and then complaining about all they have to do and the expense of the upkeep of their children. These same people will go out and get a dog for the children that they complain about all day and then rant about what the puppy has chewed, went pee on and so forth.
Having never owned a terrier of any kind before I got Gracie I was in for some learning experiences during her puppy months. There are unique personality traits that some terriers have and maybe some people just don't know how to train a dog to begin with.
In many ways Gracie has been the easiest dog to train I have ever had but at the same time the most challenging simply because I had to learn different methods of dealing with her alpha personality. I never would have imagined a tiny 2 pound puppy being an alpha pup but that is what I was facing when she was a baby. I have enjoyed every minute of it though.

i agree and love the puppy phase. i'm happy that Sadie still sometimes softly nibbles on my fingers like a newborn pup. it makes me feel like she's still my little baby. she'll barely close her mouth on my fingers now, but it's still sweet that she's still a chewing baby. and i love both mine and hope they stay babies forever.

I agree w some of the other posts - you made me miss the puppy days! Gidget is still young, 2, and still has the zoomies, hides behinds curtains and jumps out at you, etc.

I still talk about little Cricket's puppy days when she would get kleenex out of my purse and shred it under the bed, come out w the tissue stuck to her nose and look at me. I'm getting choked up now. I'm so glad I had that time w her.

great rant .. and I think we all could add a lot more!!!

I will say... the first dog I got for my grils (about 12 years ago) was well cared for but I did not have a clue!! I didn't even tell my dh I was getting him because I thought he would not notice. Sebastain was a 7 lb pomerianain and ..well... he was noticed. My thing is.. I got him and it was MY responsibility to keep him and care for him. I have been learning everyday about dog care sense that day some not so much fun, but all part of the package!!
