| Medical Pricing - Now I've Heard EVERYTHING! OK, now I really have heard everything. Many of you know I work in a hospital. And as a hospital employee I have heard it said many many times that the cost of medical treatment is too high. People do not believe that hospitals and physicians have as high of an overhead as they claim - it is all profit. I confess that to an extent I agree but what I just heard blew me away and made me furious. One of our techs called a company to get a replacement handle for an expensive medical testing device. I saw the broken handle and it is PLASTIC and looks like a very small crank. It flips up and down. The tech wanted to order two of them one for the repair and one for a spare but the company only allows us to purchase one. The part would cost $3.00 in a hardware store but our price???? $50.00 PLUS $50.00 for shipping. If we want it overnight it will be $100.00 for shipping. Why just one? Because if they ship out two they can't charge $200.00 for overnight. We have to buy from them because it is their machinery and no one else makes the handles for it. God forbid that they use universal parts. Hospitals may make a lot of money but the companies that sell X-ray machines and other such equipment are making a fortune!!!!!! |

| I know what you mean. I worked in hospitals. The State says hospitals must meet certain construction/engineering standards/grade. It is very expensive construction. Hospitals must have very expensive generators, sewage precautions, disposable biohazard waste. Just one of our TEE probes in cardiology is $20,000. Ultrasound machines are close to a quarter of a million a piece. It's like everyone who sells things to hospitals views them as a goldmine, and the poor pt suffers. |

| We have a new thing here in south Florida...you can make an appointment for the ER..that makes no sense to me. IF you can wait, why are you going to the ER????? Go to a walk in clinic. The medical profession amazes me....but I am glad to have it when needed. |

| Ha! My stepdaughter is wheelchair bound and a few adaptions added to her chair to suit her... Price tag $6500.00. The molded back is made from the same technology used when computers are shipped... that foam that fits around it so well and fills up the box. Air activated... not rocket science! rip offs!

| The price of everything is determined by what the market will support. A very significant part of the problem is government regulation, which makes things so difficult and expensive to be in compliance with that people/companies are discouraged from entering into business. This means less competition, which means the one or two manufacturers that do produce the desired item can name any price they want.

| I hear you! My company sells and supplies handicapped equipment, rehab wheelchair's, home construction and van modifications.... WHAT AMAZED me years ago is what our government would pay for some of these items.....today you can hardly get qualified for motorized scooter without jumping through hoops!! I certainly feel for those WHO rely on government funding for their care it keeps getting worse. I know it won't be around when I need it. I don't know why these manufactures have to charge an arm and a leg for a $3.00 part, they own the market on what they manufacture and make it so it's not compatiable with an after market item...SAD

| *ducks and avoids being slapped* I'm SOOO glad to be Canadian ... our gov't may be useless at times, but at least we never have to bare those costs directly, at the end of the day, I'd much rather pay taxes than pay for medical costs.

On the other side of the coin we pay medical costs, taxes AND insurance premiums here. Not fair! | |

I pay for insurance and maintenance on my car, and I believe it my personal responsibility to do the same for my body. At the same time, I believe in helping people who genuinely need assistance. Our taxes are also relatively low....although I think they should be even lower.

| I review invoices for radionuclides as one of my responsibilities and most physicians offices charge at least 400% more than the cost. It just blows my mind at the difference between the actual cost and what they are charging. |

| You gave me a chuckle... I'm sure you meant radionuclide scans, not radionuclides (unstable atoms). |

| On second thought, maybe you meant the injected radioisotope used in the scan. Ok, now I'm curious which one has the 400% markup. |
