Without naming names--Your opinions on beauty/fashion/handbag forums

I'm going to admit, I do have a $1500 Prada bag. For me, it was worth every penny. I wear it pretty much every day, and it dresses up and down. The material is such that I can take it to the park with me and put it on the grass without worrying about ruining it. In fact, that was what planted the seed in my head originally: I ruined a really nice leather purse by putting it on a tree stump and getting sap all over it.

It also just makes me feel great every time I wear it. Even if I look awful and I'm wearing sweatpants, I pick up the bag, and I'm like, "don't even think of messing with me or my awesome Prada bag."

The only thing I didn't consider was that I can't drop it off at the shelter when I walk dogs, because the purse is far more valuable than the contents. So I'm looking for a cheaper casual bag for that. Also, I have a purse obsession.

But yes, most designers nowadays are marketing to the masses. Think back in the 80s and before, when only old ladies carried around LVs and Chanels. Now every tween thinks they deserve one if they are anybody at their school. Really takes away the specialness of having a luxury good. Doesn't really seem so luxurious when everyone has one. Part to blame would be the knockoff market, but think about it, all the big designers really started pushing their product to the "regular" person say about 10 or so years ago. No one could afford these items, so the knockoff market came in to fill the gap. (much like puppymillers huh?) Now the luxury companies are all in a twist about knockoffs out there, when it was the knockoff market that really made people want these brands even more. It was basically free advertising for them, and realistically, people that didn't care about carrying a fake wouldn't EVER splurge on the real thing anyway, so it's not like they were really losing any customers.

and to top it off, the quality is not the same anymore.

I wasn't sure if it was a random person on a random forum. Companies do pay random people to join forums and spread the word about their products. They are supposed to sound like a typical consumer, not a company spokesman. I just don't see how the average person can even begin to afford this type of thing. These women seem to want to impress other women, not men. When a man can spot designer clothing or merchandise, he's not really the sort of man I'd be interested in anyway! I do agree that designers not only give away clothing to celebs, but now they even pay them to wear their stuff!

I kind of think the television show "Sex and the City", helped to get designer names out to average consumers. Never could figure out how Carrie could afford those shoes, bags, and wardrobe with a job as a weekly newspaper column writer and the author of one book.

Keep in mind she had a rent-controlled apartment and spent ALL her money on clothes. Remember the episode where she realized she'd spent $40K on shoes alone?

Versatility is part of an objects worth, I think. But my original point was that this woman has no style! There's just something about her that bothers me. She's all dressed up, but still looks plain, if that makes sense. You know how some people look like they just rolled out of bed looking cool? Throw strange things together and it works, that's their personal style. Her's is like cookie cutter boring. And all her poses are the same!

Wasn't that supposed to be part of the comedy of the show? The ridiculousness of her spending every dime she had on Manolos and cosmos. Apparently a lot of women didn't get the joke. Or maybe I don't get the show. I only watched a few episodes. I've never been a SJP fan, can't get past that face.

Yes, I do know what you mean. There's fashion, and then there's personal style. Very few people have personal style, I think, and you definitely don't if you just buy for the label.

It reminds me of the Osmond family show, when the mother and daughter came back from a shopping spree, and there were literally bags spilling out of the back of their SUV. It must have been $30K of clothing. But it's not special when you can buy it like candy. OTOH, most of us take things for granted that other people would consider special, so it's all in your perspective, I guess.

I know the type you are talking about. And, I don't personally have a problem paying for well made products or for what you want. As far as my own personal style/fashion......The show What Not To Wear was in our area a while back and I was terrified someone had called them here for ME!

Oh, I didn't know that was part of the comedy; this show was how I viewed living in New York city when I was a young girl. Other girls have fantasies of being a princess, I use to talk to my best friend in kindergarten about moving to New York, and getting an apartment together. I was very "mature" at 5, and part of me never outgrew that level of maturity.
