Where were you on 9/11?

This is REALLY going to show how young I am haha. I was in 3rd grade. I actually remember the day perfectly, even though I was so little.

I was in my classroom and school had just started. My elementry school was preschool - 3rd grade. Because we were so young, they didn't make any announcements over the PA system as to not upset us. But I do remember that my teacher got a phone call from the office and started crying. After she composed herself she took us into the corner of the room, closed to blinds, and locked the door (in retrospect, I realize that the school was in lockdown). We had NO idea what was going on, but figured we were just having a 'fun' day. My teacher read to us all day, and she let us color. I remember we were all laughing because one by one everyone was being called down to the office to be signed out of school, and we had no idea why.

I didn't get signed out. My parents were at a funeral that day. They decided it was best for us to stay in school because that was probably the safest place for us to be (and you could see the smoke from the towers in our house, and they wanted to find out as much as they could before having to explain it to us).

I remember that my aunt was on a business trip, and due to return home to Newark airport that morning, so for a few hours we had no idea if she was alive or not. She was fine, her plane had been grounded. But that was really terrifying.

I was preparing to go to Houston Hobby for my flight back to NJ. (I used to travel between the two states.) My sister called in a panic....fearful that I was already in the air.

I put the television on just as a replay was on with one of the planes hitting the tower. It was so shocking, almost like something from a horror movie. Just unimaginable. Only the most depraved of human beings could do such a thing.

I stayed in Houston for another week, and then returned to what was then home. Like most, I chose not to let cowards ruin my way of life and continued to live my life as normal.

I was at home when my husband called to tell me what had happened with the first plane. I turned on CNN just in time to see the second plane hit.

I kept my oldest 2 home from school that day because rumors were flying that San Diego, with all it's military bases, was a target. Spent a good deal of the morning listening to the planes being deployed from the air bases around us.

I stayed glued to the tv all day until it was time to go to a doctor's appointment for my youngest. We found out that day that she had an ASD.

I stopped on the way home from that appointment to buy a new flag to fly out front.

I was at work and my Mom called to tell me a plane had hit the World Trade tower. I thought how sad, thinking it was like a small plane that had run into the building, Then all the department heads were called into the VP's office to tell us what had happened and that if anyone had relatives in it they could go home. I was in charge of a call center and the calls just slowed down to nothing as everyone was glued to the news. The company set up TV's in the cafeteria so people could go watch it. I didn't want to see it until I was at home, not sure why. My Bosses dtr was there and he couldn't get a hold of her the whole day. He was a wreck and he finally got word she was ok at the end of the day. Such a horrible day.

I was getting ready for work and turned on the TV just as all of this was happening. I taught preschool. I wanted to stay home, but I was the teacher so that option was out. Every one of my preschoolers were there that day. Weird day....very sad.

I was working at a MD office at the time. The announcement came on the radio and I stopped what I was doing to be sure that I heard correctly....There were no TVs so the first video glimpse I got was after work at 5pm! I was able to see pictures on the internet but no news broadcasts at work. What a sad and memorable day. I'll never forget those images. I also remember the disturbing video on MSNBC of people jumping to their death which was then later pulled because I never saw it again. Very disturbing...My thoughts go out to anyone with friends or family lost that day.

Steve, thanks for starting this Thread. We should all reflect on this sad day. I was delivering for Fedex and all of a sudden airplanes from all around started landing. They were flying very low and it scared me to death.

I had dinner at Windows of the World Saturday night. Came home Sunday from spending the summer working at the Trade Center. I was watching Mark Haines on CNBC when he was interrupted by the news and I was glued to the TV for days. I am glad to be alive.

I was at home and had just put the kids onto the school bus. It was then that I finally turned on the Today Show and Matt and Katie were talking about the plane hitting the first tower. Not really sure what was happening at this point they talked back and forth about the possibilities of what was going on. Speculating it might have been a horrific accident. The image of the burning tower in the background. This is the part that I will NEVER forget~A plane came into the live picture in the background and slammed into the second tower. Matt said to Katie this is an act intentional act of terror (or something along those lines) we are at war. I felt sick and just sat there watching as they replayed the second crash several times. Then I felt panic that my husband was in downtown Chicago and possibly in danger. My two oldest were in school but Megan hadn't gotten onto the school bus yet so I kept her home with me. I was one of those mom picking up my kids but the school didn't want to let me take them out. They felt I was over reacting to the situation. That afternoon I could see and hear the fighter jets flying over our house. All the neighbors came out when there was a BOOM as they flew over. I just remember watching and crying all day for all the people that had lost their lives. Just not able to comprehend the amount of hatred that a group of people could have toward the United States to cause so much pain and terror to so many.

Steve~this was a great thread and I appreciate that you stated it so that we could all remember those that lost their lives that day. I am very thankful to all the members of the Armed Services that have given so much to keep us safe while being in harms way. So have given their lives while others have given their health to serve and protect.

I totally agree! Today is a day that we need to show respect for our country, our military and most of all those that have lost their lives on that day 5 years ago.
