That is one of the most, if not the most difficult jobs in the Corps, in peace time and war. Back in the late 60's when I went to PI, it was when the Corps was not the kid and gentle, do not touch, beat up, or abuse, as it is today. It is now all watered down. I hated my DI's but they did a great job of preparing us for what was ahead. At OCS years later, I was ready for them, and did a lot of laughing inside at their sayings and motivation techniques.

Your Dad was the best of the best, and I know I would get along great with him. As an Officer, I had several former DI's work for me. They were the best.

I just called him, he was a DI in PI in 54....He was a mean SOB, LOL, Chewed that cigar on the side of his mouth until it was a nub. They could do magic with the butt of the gun.

Chesty Puller was still active then! that was 3 years before the Ribbon Creek incident when 6 recruits dies when their DI marched them into the creek at night.

Can you believe the Government is again looking at the mission of the Corps. Seems like every 5 years some idiot decides that maybe we can eliminate the Corps and save a few dollars.

He may have been mean, but the DI's really actors. Wish I knew that then!

What you wrote about the Corps reminded me of Pat Conroy's book, The Lords Of Discipline. Have you ever read it? I realize he can be controversial to a Marine because of The Citadel, but that book is one of my favorites.

No, I never have. I did see that it is available on Amazon .com and I will order it on the Yorkie Rescue Link on their home page. Thanks Lisa for suggesting it. I see it has a lot of great reviews. I know a lot of the Citadel Graduates go into the Army. I do not recall every meeting any, but I do know several VMI graduates that I served with. At the time I was in, 3-10% of the Naval Academy grads p[ted for the Marine Corps. Not sure what the percentage is now.
