For someone on a budget, there are excellent laptops for $400 or a little less. I almost hit a closeout sale at Best Buy for a Toshiba that had one of the new processors that is supposed be really good for video and other processes -- think they wanted only $350 for it, so they sold out quickly.
The least expensive Macbook is $900+ as Brit noted above. She also mentioned a student discount of $100.
