| I consider them part of law enforcement. Just not out on the streets. I work in the same building as our county jail and certainly appreciate their long hours and hard work. Probably a pretty thankless job at times, too.

| My brother was a correction officer for 15 years... I guess you would consider him Law enforcement.... Its a pretty depressing job if you ask me, Id hate to babysit criminals all day long!! He often had to work in Protective Custody unit... where pedophiles, rapist etc where, I could never have done it... but I guess someone has too!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I too consider them law enforcement, and think that would be a very stressful job. You're working with the worse segments of society, and after a while, your viewpoint on the world could become very jaded.

| I wasn't going to do this but have to ask, what you mean by law enforcement? Are you meaning they can take criminal charges out on people? In VA anyone can take out Misdemeanor charges, but Felonies are investigated and charged by law enforcement officers aka the police. Are you asking...do I believe they should be respected by prisoners and the public as LE Officers are? The answer to that is absolutely! LE Officers are outside dodging bullets but Corrections Officers are inside dodging shanks. In VA both attend training academies. Difference is LEO attend much longer training to educate them on the criminal codes. Either position has me taking my hat to them for keeping us safe!!!

| To answer your question I was asking more along the lines of the respect they do not get. Too many people refer to them as "just guards", even though they put their lives on the line every day to keep the american people safe. If they didn't do the jobs they do these monsters would be out on the street. My husband is a corrections officer and I see how the police officers do not even give them the respect they deserve. It just really bothers me. I would never be offended by an average person thinking of them that way but the police should understand more what they do on a daily basis. The way the media talks about CO's, they make them out to look just like felons themselves, because the only media they get is when one turns bad (bringing in drugs or other contraban, beating an inmate ect.) 99% of the good things they do are kept quiet. I joined a group online that is supposed to be for wives of LEO's, and they put in the description that it is for CO's also....well they even shun me a little, I stopped posting on that site for that reason. I just want to get a better understanding as to why people do not view them as law enforcement. They take the same oath as other LEO's, they unhold the law inside and out of the prison walls. If someone is in trouble outside the walls and he is around he HAS to respond, it is his job. I just wish the media would give them more of the good attention so the average citizen would see what they have to put up with. Even resturaunts that offer discounts to LEO's do not extend it to CO's, which doesn't make any sense to me, not that I really care if we get a discount or not it's just the principle of it, they shouldn't exclude them just because they aren't on the street. A cop can go an entire day and not have to deal with a serial murderer or rapist ect. but when my DH goes to work he see's thousands a day, and I have to sit at home and wonder if today is the day that one gets bored and takes him out. Sorry this is turning into more of a worried annoyed wife rant lol. I just want everyone to really understand what they do, and wish they would get the respect that they deserve, that's all. Anyways I've made this long enough I'll stop now....thanks to all of you for listening to me. Anyone who hasn't responded feel free to put up your opinions, or responses. I hope I have not offended anyone in anyway.

| I just read what I wrote and realized all the typo's....sorry. also I wanted to add that I did not mean all police officers do not give them respect, I only meant some. So please do not think I meant all. Sorry if anyone took it that way, I know I made it sound that way and I apologize.

| Thank you to all that do think of them as LEO's. I just wish I could find a group that supports the wives of CO's, the stress we go through is insane. While he is at work I have ZERO contact with him, only time I can contact him is if there is an emergency, and I have to talk to about 4-5 people just to get to him. It is so scary. While he is at work I dread my phone ringing, or someone knocking on my door. If he dies while at work they will come to my door, if he is injured they will call. Is anyone here married to a CO, or any kind of LEO? It's just nice to have someone who truly understands the fears that I go through on a daily basis.

| I think that's in allot of cases not just CO with officers. Look at nurses or ST against Dr. I know it's a big comparison but you get an idea. Plus allot(not all) of the officers think there mighty powerful with their badge. And my honest opinion CO are more like counselors with benefits for the bullies or off the track people. I don't know much in that dept but that's what comes in mind.
