Book Suggestion: The Hunger Games
 
Has anyone else read this? If not, I HIGHLY recommend you do. The series is only 2 books deep right now (The Hunger Games and Catching Fire.) They are very good. Just curious as to if anyone else has read them?

We SHOULD have a Bama book club! I would make sure you all stay entertained.

Suzanne Collins is the author.

Basically, it's set as if the countries of North America no longer exists. Instead, there are 12 "Districts" ruled by one all-powerful "Capitol." As a means of reminding the districts that they cannot be overthrown, they have this event every year called The Hunger Games where each year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12-18 go to this arena and baiscally fight to the death. The main character's 12 yo sister is chosen from the "reaping" as a contestant and she steps up to take her place. The games themselves have this really elaborate set of rules and traditions.

The author has a very unique talent for making it too over the top to be believable and morbid, but still real enough to really draw you in emotionally.

It is SOOOOOO good!

I'm just seeing this now and LOVE a good book- but it can't be sad- is it sad?

It's not really sad, but it is a bit depressing reading about some of the hardships some of the people face. But, the overall concept is pretty far fetched, so it's easy to remember that these are not real people.

I let a friend borrow them (there are 2) Saturday night. Monday AM he called and begged me to bring him the 2nd one, and Tuesday he actually took off work to go home and read!:p They certainly suck you in!

The Hunger Games is the first one
Catching Fire is the second one in the series
And The Victors is the 3rd and final one and will be out in Aug:thumbup:

Well....you know, Oprah is soon to be out of the biz.....I'm just saying!:D

It does sound like a good series. My reading time is limited though anymore....I might have to wait for the movie.

Ok can I tell you how sick this is- I had a dream about this book last night. I was in the book- and clearly all I know about is the small blurb you gave me- but it was SUCH a real dream... needless to say- I am going to my library's website right now to request it!

I just can't wait for the final book. I was first introduced to the series about a year and a half ago when my friend brought over the book on cd (she drove in from MO)... she thought it was so great and just HAD to share... so we listened for hours... and then I just had to go and get the books... the funny thing is, the lady on the cd had a British accent so it was hard to not read the books with the accent lol Especially the names ;)

This friend was also the one who introduced me to the Twilight Series (WAY back in the day) and Scott Westerfeld.... anyone read his books? OH MY STARS.... if you haven't, you need to check out his series "Uglies" series!!! Its so good!

Never heard of Scott Westerfield, but as I'm almost done with the series I'm working on now, and seeing as you seem to have the same taste as I do, I just may look those up.

Ironically, my aunt turned me on to Twilight, I saw on Meyer's site the recomendation for Hunger Games, read them, and then turned around and got my aunt addicted to them in return! :p

Oh you should! I think you will really like him. He has a few other series that I have not read yet but I want to look into. :) They look amazing! Such a good writer, IMO. ;)

As for Meyer, I actually read 'The Host' before Twilight. ;)

My friend who introduces me to all these books is a huge reader and is a librarian so she always passes along to me the "good reads" ;)

What series are you reading now? Please share! :)

Right now I'm reading DreamQuake, which is the sequel to DreamCatcher. They're decent. I recently read Timeline by Michael Crighton. VERY good.:thumbup::thumbup:

Hunger Games was awesome! I started Catching Fire about a month ago and am in about 2 chapters. I have not had tome to read :mad:. After I catch up on Greys tonight maybe I'll read :rolleyes:

Never heard of DreamCatcher and DreamQuake? Is it worth it (since they are decent)? lol

Hmm... I will have to check out Timeline, that will be next on my list. I will see if the library has it! Thanks! I will let you know what I think of it. hehe

Yeah, they are still worth it, certainly. VERY unique storyline. They are just a bit confusing as first...nothing is really explained and leaves you a bit confused when you read it, but you start making sense of it as the story progresses.

I read Hunger Games several months ago, and loved it! I read it in one day because I couldn't put it down. I bought Catching Fire, but I'm scared to start it... I don't have the time!

I would definitely recommend this series to everyone!

I just bought "The Hunger Games" and I can't wait to read it! It looks soooo good. Unfortunately I have to finish reading another book before I can start it.

Cool! I can't wait to see what you all think so we can discuss! I think the best part about HG is that you NEVER do figure things out. Just when you think you have, the author throws a major curve ball at you. Usually right at the end of a chapter so you just HAVE to keep reading and find out what happens.:rolleyes:

I am halfway through the book! So far nothing has really "happened"- adventure wise but i still can't put it down- must be the amazing writing! can't wait until i'm done and we can discuss
