| Weight-Loss Surgery Hi Guys, My mom just told me she is going to have weight loss surgery on Sept. 30th and I am VERY freaked out about it! I'm so scared for her. She just turned 50 and I think she's decided to do something drastic without really thinking about it. I remember someone here posted they had it done and were very pleased about the results and had pictures too but I can't find the post anywhere. Can someone help me find that post? Also, does anyone else have any experience with this, both the good and the bad? I'd like to know what kind you had done, the effects afterwards, complications, everything. You can PM me if you want.

| Is it gastric bypass surgery? I;ve seen a few stories about it on tv. But like any other surgery, it has alot of risks. I hope your mom picked a good doctor that would give her the information she's suppose to know. Good doctors will not allow her to push through with the surgery without her knowing the risk that it comes with. Goodluck! You can also help her by printing out articles about the surgery and the effect it will have on her life. my prayers to you and your mom |

| Me too. I haven't even looked into how much it would cost because I'm afraid of the cost. It doesn't help anything that I'm diabetic so that would probably be the first reason they turn me down. I could lose a 110# person (which I weighed at 21yrs) but I think at my age I'd be a little too thin. But I could lose 100# and not be unhappy. I've tried a lot of things but I'm one of those people who when they go off the diet (not slip) can't seem to get back on that particular diet again. Groooaaannn, I'm so fat! Oh, oh, my boss used to say, "I was fast until I lost my S." Sylvia |

| I missed this thread,,,,,,,,, My sister Debbie had the gastric bypass surgery. She was 378 lbs and would actually stop breathing at night when she was sleeping. She had always been a big girl her whole life. The doctors told her that she was going to die if she didn't do anything about it! So, She decided to have the surgery. It's been about 5 years and she couldn't be more happy! I have to admit, the surgery went well. BUT she stoped breathing 2 times in recovery and got very ill. It took her quite a while to heal, but I know for a fact it was the best thing she could have done to save her life. She lost a total of 248 lbs! And now is at a healthy 130. She even got pregnant with Cherish not even a year after surgery and the doctors were worried because she continued to lose while pregnant. Cherish was just fine and came out a whopping 8.6 lbs. My sister has been through alot and is now in trouble again. But I know if she was still the big girl she was, I know deep in my heart she wouldn't be here today! She tackeled one hurdle with the wieght loss and now she has to clean up do her time and be the wonderful mommy we all know she can be! I'm sorry to go on and on about my sister. But I really think if you are 100 + lbs,,,, I say go for it! Good luck to your mother! Here are some before and after pictures of Debbie,,,,,, The after pic is of Debbie on the right, Andrea (who just became a mommy last week) in the middle. And there is me on the left. Boy I can sure lose some lbs by the looks of my double chin! eeeekkkkk

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Wow Awesome story !! Latuya - I don't mean to change the subject but you said she stopped breathing at night ? My husband does this - Was it called Sleep Apnea ? Is that from being overweight or something else ? My husband has gained like 40 pounds from his illness and the steriods he's taking.... and scares the h*ll out of me at night - he stops breathing for LONG periods of time....then GASPS for breath.....I jump straight out of my skin and it's awful to witness - did the Sleep problem stop after losing weight ? |

| Wow, Moncia- your sister looks amazing! I would never have guessed it was the same person! I only know one person who has had the surgery. My aunt's neice has always been very, very heavy and had the surgery done a year or two ago. Unfortunately, she didn't put in the effort to lose weight just expecting the surgery to do it all for her. She is as heavy (if not heavier) than before her surgery- it's sad. She had no medical complications from the surgery, though. a |

| Monica, Thanks you so much for sharing your sister's story with me. I cannot believe the difference in the pictures - it is so unreal. It is wonderful to hear and see positive stories. I truly wish the best for your sister. By the way, you are beautiful. My mother just told me she too has the sleep apnea issue and the doctor told her that losing the weight fixes it in 95% of the cases. Also, he told her if you don't do something, that stopping breathing is very hard on your heart and will cause other issues. She is planning on having the Roux-N-Y gastric bypass. It is the one where it is physically impossible to gain the weight back. The websites that were suggested by Missy'sMommy and lycansmom are wonderful. They provide lots of information and are a great place to go to get positive advice. I have since learned the risk is really not as big as you hear that it is in the media and many more people have done it than you realize. I am actually feeling positive about it for my mom now. Though of course I'll be nervous when she has it done, I think it may indeed be for the best. Thanks to everyone here for their support and I will keep you all posted on how she does.
