My problem with the chicken is everyone I've found near me who does cage free does it on a small scale and slaughters them themselves. It is illegal in FL to sell meat that hasn't been slaughtered in a slaughterhouse so they get around that rule by giving you a "slaughtering lesson" which brings the chickens up to approximately $25 each. I actually did think of one thing I haven't tried though. We go to our farmer's market every Saturday so next Sat. I'm going to ask around to the farmers. I don't know how I missed that obvious possibility.

| It's ironic that I came across this post. A couple of weeks back I joined a group on Facebook that was about a small dog named Peanut that was tortured. Someone on my friend's list posted to me and said "And, it's alright to slit the throat of a steer while it's alive." When I read that I posted to him and said "What does that have to do with Peanut." Well, that thought has been bothering me for a couple of weeks now. It made me think. I call myself an animal lover. I fight for the rights of animals in puppymills yet really how does this differ from farm animals that are tortured everyday for the sake of meat. I know that everyone has their own views on this but as of late I've been really disturbed by man kind and it's treatment of animals. And, I find myself being hypocritical to say that it's not ok to torture dogs, cats, domesticated animals but it is alright to torture for food that we really can survive without. In Korea, they slaughter dogs and cats for meat. In France they use dogs and cats for shark bait. Here they torture too yet it's not as shocking because it's a chicken or a cow or a pig. I made the concious decision to try and find other food sources and have decided to go veggie. I don't condem those that eat meat but for me I'm finding it a choice I'd rather not make and I'm going veggie. Elaine |

! Amazing post. I haven't eaten meat in about 16 years or so, and I really don't miss it. I also don't condemn meat eaters - my hubby eats meat and I'd never ask him to make a choice just bc it's what I do. I just condemn cruelty and, like you, that's why I couldn't eat meat anymore - it wasn't for health reasons that I stopped eating it, it wasn't for this or that - it was that I couldn't support what happens to those poor animals.

I have a thread on another (non dog related) forum called 'vegetarians- what's for dinner?'. If these older ones get buried I'll start one here. I think no matter how long you've been veggie, it's helpful for all of us to get ideas from each other. It's nice for those; ugh, what am I going to make for dinner tonight? nights.![]() Yay Elaine!
