| Any estheticians or cosmetologists out there? Esthetician or Nurse. Those are the two careers I CANNOT decide on. I'm in school and doing my pre-reqs for Nursing, but I'm still going back and forth with the issue. I have been for quiet a while actually. I know there's possibility of combining the two, but I want some opinions. If you are an esthetician or cosmetologist here are some questions. Did you like your school? Why were you interested in this field? How fast did you find a job? Where do you work (spa, salon, doctors office...)? Do you think it's a rewarding career? Have you taken more classes to get more experience? Anything else you want to tell me? I hope there's someone out there!

| nurse NURSE! Estheticians make commission and are suffering in this bad economy. I used to own a salon / spa and don't do it. Be a nurse. They are needed and make good money.

Guess I'll stick to my pre-reqs and see where it takes me.

| I was (I guess I still am ) a cosmetologist. I really enjoyed it . I worked for a makeover studio *my first job at 18* , a spa , and then for a private photographer. But it hasn't been my career for a very long while now. I had always wanted to do makeup /effect makeup since I was little . I did have to keep learning to keep up with new trends in make-up. It was something I had always wanted to do , so I did But then went onto studying other things We will always need nurses , and considering today's economy , that would be my choice ( well my choice for you anyway , because I pass out if I even think about needles ) If you like cosmetology a license in that doesn't take long and you could just dabble in that for fun. good luck

| I am an esthetician. I no longer work but I do maintain my license. I would say of the two, nursing is by FAR your better option. Did you like your school? Yes Why were you interested in this field? I was very interested in the clinical side of skin care as opposed to the pampering. I was especially interested in treatments for sun damage which is a pretty big issue in FL, as you would imagine. How fast did you find a job? I was lucky and found a job at a nice spa immediately but I doubt that would be the case now. Where do you work (spa, salon, doctors office...)? I worked at a salon/spa Do you think it's a rewarding career? I loved it but it is the hardest field to build a clientele. When money gets tight the esthetician is the first thing people give up. Most people will find the money to maintain their hair and nails but facials get perceived as a luxury. Have you taken more classes to get more experience? I always took classes offered at the skin care shows and I took additional training on chemical peels. I also had to take training to be licensed to do body wraps. I think I learned the most from other estheticians on forums. If you have any other questions just let me know. It isn't a field I would recommend if financial security is an issue or unless you feel pretty confident of securing a job with a doctor.

| Seems like everyone is saying to go for nursing. It does seem more practical as nurses are always needed but... many people don't NEED facials or any of the other stuff. If I did go through with esthetician, I wouldn't get my license for almost two years (there's a wait list for the program, it's about a year). The economy could change by then... but it also may not. I'll stick to nursing and if I ever want to just play around with being an esthetician it only takes about a year to complete. Now, to decide what department of nursing to go into. LOL Thanks everyone

| Any estheticians or cosmetologists out there Got mine in the 60's, worked on and off while raising a family. You need a degree in phycology, "don't think I spelled that right, did spell ck", to keep your sanity. Then went into Real Estate, that was great but not this day and time.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | "You need a degree in psychology" I totally agree. I worked off and on as well. I haven't stood behind a chair in years but I keep my license up so I can shop in the beauty supply stores.

| i have a cosmetology license but i dont work in a salon & i probably wont until i move back to cali. i'm going back to school as well so we'll see how far that goes. if you get a bachelors in nursing & work as an RN you make great money and the time/effort you put into school WILL pay off. my cousin just got her license a couple weeks ago and she's been looking at different hospitals all within a pay range of 55-70k a year where she lives (CA). i started the nursing program a couple years ago but its just not for me as i can't stand body fluids/guts/insides of people etc.

I've heard nurses around here have the potential to make a good amount of money. &I love all the body stuff... I've always been fascinated with things that have to do with the body. I just love learning about it because we're such interesting creatures. I want to know everything, HAHA. I think nursing will be a good career path, there's so many departments I could choose from. Although I don't think I could be an E.R nurse.
