| Man stabs dog to death to rescue 77-year-old Man stabs dog to death to rescue 77-year-old Man stabs dog to death to rescue 77-year-old | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register ASSOCIATED PRESS • February 2, 2009 A man stabbed a dog to death in Council Bluffs on Sunday after seeing it charge a woman and her dog, officials said. Ann Lyon, 77, was in her front yard with her dog on Sunday when an American bull dog attacked her, said Galen Barrett, the city's chief animal control officer. "It proceeded to come across the street and began to attack her," Barrett said Monday. "It grabbed her arm." Kevin Daub said he was driving by but stopped when he saw the dog charge Lyon. He jumped out of his car, pulled the dog off Lyon and struggled with the animal for a minute. Sensing he was tiring, Daub pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed the dog to death. "I just heard her screaming 'Help, help me, help me,' so I ran over and tried pulling it off her," Daub told Omaha, Neb., television station WOWT. Barrett said it's unclear if the dog was after Lyon's dog, which he described as a young Rottweiler mix, and Lyon got in the middle. Barrett said Lyon was wearing a leather coat, which protected her. "I talked to her this morning. It's an issue of bruises rather than punctures," he said. Lyon had refused medical treatment. Barrett said the dead dog would be tested for rabies, but it was licensed. He said the dog is from the same neighborhood as Lyon's, near downtown Council Bluffs. Barrett said the owner's name had not been released. The investigation was ongoing, and charges could be pending, he said. Barrett said charges, if filed, could range from a dog at large to harboring a dangerous dog, which are simple misdemeanors punishable by fines. Barrett said the American bull dog managed to get out of the owner's property. He said there had been no previous reports of problems with the dog. "I don't know what tripped it," he said. Lyon's dog was not injured.

| That poor women must have been so frightened. I can't imagine the fear she felt. Those dogs are very strong. It's a sad story all around. I am glad someone came to her aid. Bless that man who did. |

| I'm always really wary of large dogs. Actually, anything taller than my knees... well actually (if I'm being honest), I'm scared of my in-law's Pomeranian. She's MEAN though! lol

| It's funny, when I saw the title of this thread I was immediately ready to go lynch the man who stabbed the dog. Then I read the story only to change my mind and consider the same man a hero. Sigh. When are people going to learn to take care of their pets? Everyone in this situation would be perfectly alright if the owner were just a little bit more cautious. That poor woman must have been terrified! And how long did this man have to fight with the dog before he killed it? Can you imagine having to fend off an attack while reaching into your pocket, pulling out and opening a pen knife! I think he should be recognized as a hero! How wonderful to come to that woman's aid. |

| I'm just glad someone was there to help this woman & her pup. How many times do we hear about people or dogs being injured or killed by some out of control off leash dog. Just this past weekend a YT member told how she & her sister were walking with their 3 dogs when another dog attacked them - and some guy just stood there and watched -- Bravo for this man doing something - yes it is sad that one dog is dead now, but that is the fault of the dog's owner - and the responsibility lies there

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | Thank God for that man. What a brave, selfless act for him to do! I'm glad he was able to save that woman and her dog. It is unfortunate that the other dog had to die. When I was young...probably 9 or 10 or so, I was walking my old lab mix, Rusty, around the corner, and this guy and his pit bull came out of no where and the dog started attacking Rusty (had him by the juggular). The guy was doing nothing (he did it on purpose...he's a screw up. In jail right now for armed robbery), and I was young, so I couldn't do anything. Some older man jumped out of his car and got the dog off of Rusty. I've always been so greatful for that. I don't want to think about what would have happened if he hadn't been there.
