Owners of pet's, giving them up all over

OK, I think a lot of people on here know that last year we had to rehome 2 of our dogs - Maddie and Rusty. When we got them...of COURSE we were going to have them forever. My mom and dad had great jobs, they fit our needs PERFECTLY, we weren't wealthy but we were well off. Then, 7 years after we got Rusty, just a year after we got Maddie, my mom got sick. Long, long story short, we lost our house. We were UNABLE to keep the dogs. It was.not.possible. As much as they were "our babies" the landlords don't care if they're your babies - they are NOT our babies, legally or biologically, so we were limited with our options. At that point, the housing market hadn't gone to crap yet, so not that many places were for rent. The only place we could find absolutely would not allow dogs, so we had to rehome them. We found them AMAZING homes where they are probably even better off than they were with us. It hurt us to rehome them a lot more than it hurt them. I don't regret it, I don't feel guilty about it, it's just an emotional pain from having to do it. We aren't "selfish" "bad" people who need karma to come to us for doing what was honestly the best for the dogs that we loved very, very much. WE still suffer from it - but go look at pictures of Maddie and Rusty in their new homes (Angiedoogles has Maddie, Alaskayorkie has Rusty) and then tell me that it's selfish to give your dogs people who can take good care of them. It's not. People who will keep their dog in a cold, broken house (or maybe even on the street) and have enough food to barely keep them alive, and who are unable to take them to the vet in an emergency - that's selfish, in my opinion.

The people who DO need karma to come to them are the ones who leave their dogs locked up in foreclosed homes or just abandon them some where. The LEAST they could do is take them to the pound - give them a fighting chance. It would be fantastic if they had family/friends who could take them, though not all do. I absolutely can't understand leaving a dog behind without a second thought - that drives me nuts.

people are giving up their dogs..actually they are just turning them loose.. i can't tell you how many STRAY YORKIES we have gotten lately.. i think that people just can't afford them and just let them run! it's really sad.

Thankfully, I have small dogs that do not eat much, and they are healthy. Even having several, they could still live off of dinner leftovers if need be.
I feel horrible for the pets that are just thrown away, but I also feel terrible for the families that really truely are in such a position where rehoming is the only option. My children do come before my pets, that is just the way that it has to, and should be.

I agree with your thoughts on the horses...and the larger breed dogs. I have 3 yorkies, and the 3 of them together consume less food than a St. Bernard. Although I feed premium food, the food bill is probably around $75 per month for all 3. If I ever got to where I couldn't afford it, I would start feeding from the table. I would go without my own blood pressure medication and my husband would forfeit his own anti-inflammatories and pain medicine for his knee so we could buy Darcy's medication, if it ever came to that. Dogs are like children in the respect that they didnt ASK to be born, or ASK you to adopt them, mine will never suffer from our misfortune.

I agree with this...we downsized and sold our big house 3 yrs ago; the people that bought it had 3 large dogs and 6 cats. Within a year, they lost the house to foreclosure...the neighbors across the street said they actually broke into the house and rescued the 6 cats...apparently the ppl moved out and just left the cats in there. It was days later, after the neighbors noticed cats in the windows inside the house (and they knew the ppl had moved) they decided to rescue the poor things. They said there was no food or water, it was the middle of summer with no a/c and no open windows, and the cats had literally chewed the baseboards and trim around the doors, trying to get out. I just can't understand that not one bit...:thu mbdown I think THE PEOPLE THAT DO THIS need to be locked in a room without food, water heat or a/c for a couple of days - just to see how it feels.
