I know I'll get h*** for posting this but.... 2 Attachment(s) There is a wonderful woman named Ruth that I know from another board who has been so supportive of Emma's plight.... Yesterday afternoon she got a frantic call from a friend about a litter of Chi's just born.... three were not doing well. Ruth ran to her aid and by the time she arrived, two had started to improve but one little guy was still very frail. Ruth took him home and began tube feeding him immediately. Today they went to the vet who said the little boy has a 50/50 chance of survival.... he has a full cleft palate. :( Baby is 1.9 ounces..... Ruth has gone through "the hell of raising a cleft puppy" already in the past and says she just cannot put herself through it again. Of course, I said I'd try to help.... trouble is.... how do you get a newborn pup with these problems from Maine to Oklahoma??? Please don't post about how silly it would be to go to the expense of getting him here.... please don't post about your opinions of how he should just be put to sleep.... I doubt even a rescue group would take this baby in, considering his dim prognosis. If you have ideas, options or encouragement.... I welcome your comments. Here is "Duke".... |
LOL, you sure can title a thread that makes you look.:D I don't have any advise for you but you truly are an angel to even consider it. You really have a big heart girl! I hope it all works out and if anyone can make it happen you can.:) |
Wow, Dena...that's far away. Hello, little Duke. |
Bless you for even trying to help! |
I don't know that I could help him... but he's certainly worth the effort, as is any living thing... A rescue group just doesn't have the time or manpower to provide such intensive care... they are so overwhelmed as it is..... otherwise, I would say that would be his best option. :( |
Question... Could a baby this tiny and young even be flown? (with a human passenger of course) |
I wish he was closer.:( I have wanted to work with cleft palate pups. |
It's so generous of you to offer to help this baby Dena! I'm of no use since I don't live between Maine and Oklahoma, but maybe a YT train??? |

Bless you. In my opinion, you are an angel. |
Just wanted to send prayer's and best wishes for this little one. So tiny. Breaks your heart to see him like that knowing he may not have a future. I hope something can be worked out for you Dena. Miracles do happen and I pray for one for Duke. |

My youngest chihuahua Fynn was only 1 and 1/2 ounces when born, she didnt have cleft palet, but her siblings were mummified. She weighs approx 3 and 1/2lbs now and today is her 8th birthday!Wishing you the very best for this little chiwi. |
Don't think after all this time that you well get h*** from anyone. I know I am guilty of giving my inappropiate opinion when you started with Emma but all I could feel was the pain and being negative instead of positive, but have apologized to everyone. You have done so much for Emma, we all respect your compassion. |
I don't really know the answer but I just wanted to wish you and little Duke the best of luck. He'll be in my prayers. |

Now.... know anyone with a private plane??? hahaha ;) Truly, I appreciate your gentle words.... <<hugs>> |
What tiny little one. I understand how your heart melts. The only way I would think that he has a chance on that type of trip would be to fly out and pick him up - ok it with the airlines and treat him like a "hospital patient" so that you can take care of him in flight. |
Dena, what a big wonderful heart you have! The only thing I can offer is my prayers [and gas money if anyone comes up with an answer]! God bless you. I will be praying that you will be shown a way to help this precious little baby! |

It's 1800 miles from Portland to OKC...... a 28 hour drive one way.... :( |
This would be the route... if anyone has any ideas, please let me know... Driving Directions from Portland International Jetport (PWM), 1001 Westbrook St, Portland, ME to Will Rogers World Airport (OKC), 7100 Terminal Dr # 301, Oklahoma City, OK |
Dena you have my support and prayers :) He is a sweet little man, I wish him the best and if anyone can figure out a way, its you ;) belssings and hugs :) |
Maybe you should consider starting an actual, legitimate rescue organization...just a thought. |

I actually thought about it (very briefly) at one point... but I don't think that's something I could manage, given my physical health...... but as the need arises, I will continue to do what I can - regardless of how little that may be. |
I live in NY, I can see how far away that is from me |
It's about 8 hours away from me. I could do a halfway |
That's wonderful of you to offer..... are you comfortable with tube feeding? If you could, tell me exactly what you could do... from where to where exactly? And THANK YOU!! ::hugs:: I'm going to "work this" as though the whole thing may be a possibility for little Duke.... but I'm really not certain, considering the information that I'm getting from Ruth - if Duke is going to be able to hang on long enough.... He's just 24 hours old, but she says he may already have aspirated and she thinks she hears the beginnings of pneumonia... (i.e. "junky lungs") :( |
Email from Ruth.... Dena, He is pretty sick. He will probably die. Maybe we have to let it go. I have had no responses from my email list, but many folks must not be home from work yet. I am leaving it in God's hands. I will care for him for now. Ruth She is working on her end to form some kind of transport for Duke as well.... evidently isn't going well. :( |
Oh gosh! Poor little Duke, even so young he is a beautiful little guy! Dena, God bless you for what you are doing for Emma and now Duke, I hope you get a chance to get your healing hands on him. |

Wish there were something more I could do. :( I've contacted several rescues (a couple of emergency hotline numbers too) in Ruth's area as well as national breed rescues... with no response yet. |
