| Cleaning questions I'm attempting to become a clean, neat person. I'm not filthy, but I am a bit cluttered and messy. As a child I never had to really do any chores. I wasn't spoiled by any means, but for whatever reason mom never gave me any chores to do. She wasn't particularly fanatical keeping a neat house either. The dishes were always washed and stuff like that.. I didn't leave in filth or anything, but we always had stuff just sitting out in piles or where it didn't belong. So anyway, I'm making an effort to try and keep the entire house clean and neat. Do you use any type of cleaning schedule? I'm trying to make one, but I'm not sure how often thing need to be done. So what all things do I need to include on my schedule and how often? Any cleaning tips or hints you can offer? I know this post makes me sound like a complete idiot..but I've never been taught anything about cleaning a house. |

| Good for you! Here's basically my schedule: Daily- The obvious I guess. Make bed, keep dishes washed, keep things picked up, take out garbage and run dishwasher. I also clean my kitchen counters and stove top and run my dustbuster in my bathroom because I shed like a cat. Twice a week I vacuum the kitchen and living room. Weekly I clean everything including the bathrooms, all dusting, vaccum and mop all floors. Monthly I clean a little deeper like behind the fridge and stove, ceiling fans, inside fridge, outside of cabinets and blinds. That's all pretty approximate, sometimes it gets done and sometimes it doesn't. I think the most important thing is just picking up as you go. Maybe relate it to something. Like every time you are on the phone keep busy putting things away. It also helps to not be afraid to just throw stuff away. Also a way I trick myself into getting things done when I'm feeling super lazy is have a "movie cleaning day". I watch a network movie so it has commercials and at commercial I jump up and do as much as I can before the movie comes back on.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I clean the whole house every week and monthly a deeper cleaning is done. I hat clutter so I keep my counter tops free of just about anything. I also try and either throw out or put in the give to charity bag 5 things a day. A lot of times it is paper that has accummulated. I also try to go thru my closets every 2-3 months and take out anything I haven't worn or has gotten to small. I clean the floors every other day with 4 dogs and just spot clean during the week. Put clothes in a basket or hamper. I also have files for everything to keep paperwork organized. Good Luck and I am glad you are looking for help. My almost 23 year old dtr also hashad no chores and I can't wait to see what her place looks like if she ever moves out. I keep telling her I am trying to bring her into adulthood but she is fighting it all the way.

Great tips! I love the one about the network movie, and commercial "cleaning breaks, I seriously think my DVR has cut down on my cleaning time. I don't think it matters so much that you weren't trained as a child, I believe this behavior is wired in, and we can modifiy it, but those people that are super organized and clean freaks seem to be born that way. The happiest people have a relaxed attitude about it all, but I the most important thing is to be organized, and have a place for everything.

| Thanks for the tips everyone! I'll probably be attempting to make a schedule tonight. Whats so odd is I cannot stand for other peoples house to be untidy.. the families I babysit for always come home to a cleaner house then when they left. But my house being untidy doesn't bother me as bad. I am much happier and at peace when its neat and I can find everything. I lived in an apt in Clemson for about a month that was completely SPOTLESS. But its only because we had NO tv at all! and I ddn't have a phone either.. so all I had to do was clean. Plus I was working full time, which gave me less of an opprotunity to make a mess. |

| I have to agree with the suggestion to try flylady. She saved my butt - and my house too! I don't mind the emails. I just delete them. I do like to read the testimonials sometimes though.

| My therapist suggested flylady...for an ADD person....not good...I was so overwhelmed with the overload of emails that I finally cancelled my membership...I felt like I couldn't keep up. But the website has great suggestions and I find that what I did absorb..I still do like keeping my sink shiny and I always wear my tennis shoes to clean.
