| A question about koi I bought 3 small koi for my pond yesterday. Yesterday they were very active but today they are just laying around on the bottom of the pond. I know they go into hibernation in the winter but do they go into hibernation on chilly days because its colder out today than it was yesterday. I am just a little disappointed that they are so inactive and wondering if I made a mistake and shouldve gotten gold fish instead

| How big is the pond? I think koi need an insane amount of water.. possibly like a 100 or 1000 gallons each? ETA: This site says OVER 1000 gallons each: Resources Have you tested the water?

| Its about 200 gallons but we are adding a stream to it and another small pond to it. The pond store that I go to has them in smaller ponds than mine. I know they get large the pond store sells them in the larger sizes also. I just have 4. One is a tiny baby. The pond store gave him to me for free for Mothers day. Then I bought 3 more that are small to medium size. They are small in my pond though

| They will be pretty inactive when the water is really cold. Even goldfish do the same thing; I've had a big goldfish in a tub watergarden when the top was frozen and he basically just hibernated when it was cold....Koi will need a lot of water though; they get really big. And they don't need tons of water til they do get bigger~ It could be a change in their water too....hopefully it's just b/c it's cooler today. I love fish!

| They will be very still when it's cold out. And when it storms too sometimes. We used to have koi in a lake where I worked and we would feed them Ranch Fritos everyday at lunch, but they were never out when it stormed and during the winter you'd swear they all swam south(er) for the winter! |

| Wow, is it still cold out there?!! It is almost 100 degrees here today and my Koi are trying to hide under all the lily pads to get some shade!! Mine also go to the bottom of the pond when strangers are over!! They can hear your voice and I always talk to them when I feed them so they follow me when I go out in the yard. They will swim around the pond to the side that I am at!! My husband calls me the animal whisperer because my chickens follow me all over too!!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It really depends on your water temperature not the outside temperature; both koi and goldfish act that way when the temp is low, also they go through a shock when you first get them and may take a couple of days to get adjusted. They say the first koi needs a minimum of 1000 gallons of water and each additional koi would need 250 gallons, this is for a full-grown koi. The water quality must be pristine; and koi will develop nasty ulcerations if water quality isn't kept up. Gold fish on the other hand can survive in much smaller ponds because they don't need the same water requirements. There are some very beautiful goldfish that look exactly like koi except don't have the little barbs that looks like a mustache and they only grow to 10 –13. We built a koi pond with all the proper filtration, but when I found out koi will eat the water plants, I switched to goldfish. Koivet is a wonderful website that has lots of great information on koi and goldfish. KoiVet Forum - Index
