Nope. if I were to get one I would just get one from a breeder in the US. There's at least 1o I believe. They will have to import a breeding pair theirself or get one from an importer of exotics. Since I live in Austin, Tx now, I don't need any permits or anything to own one. If I were to breed one (even if I gave them away and not sell), I would then have to get a city/county or state permit, and a USDA licence because they are still considered rare. If you breed one with getting the proper licence/permit then they will be confiscated from you and euthanized (not given to a shelter AT ALL!). In the process, all you have to do is sign the paper work with sending in the fees then a few weeks later they come and look at the location and check you paperwork. They also require you vet to check out you house and make you follow you vets suggestions.



Oh... and if you are USDA licence for breeding an exotic animal, they will make you licence breeding your breeding dog(s), too. Because your breeding more than a domestic animal....

The fennec fox is legal to own in Tennessee, where I live, but it says you have to have an "import permit." I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds like you need one to have a fennec fox. I think they are gorgeous and would love to have one, but they are over the top in the care and maintenance department. They are escape artists, maybe impossible to house train, and need a lot of supervision and exercise. If you were situated where you could properly house one and had the time and patience, they would be great to have. I love all animals, especially the furry ones, and would love to have a lot of the exotics. If you get lucky and get a fennec fox, do let us know how it goes.

To get the permit (and I could be slightly wrong) in Tennessee, You will need to submit the form (+fee) and take a test to see if you are fit for owning the animal (you've research their background habits, food, etc.) If you pass then they will send you the permit withing 2-4wks.

And the care isn't all that bad. It would be like caring for a baby. Mood swings, diets, creating a safe environment. And from the few people that I have talked with, they have said they their fennec have yet to try and take off when leashed outside or when given the opportunity. It all depends on the animal and the type of upkeep the breeder had.

I would start with local authorities, game wardens or local animal control authorities, to find out exactly what the rules are where you live. Finding a vet to treat one might be a problem, too.

Things You’ll Need:

There is a breeder about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away from me that is helping me learn. I don't need any permits or license for Austin/Travis County unless I breed them or show them or a profit. There is a exotic pet store about a hour away were the breeder I mention takes hers.

They can dig up to that much , but more than likely they never will when living in a home. I can always provide an area with sand in my home/garage to a play area. I have join a forum for fennecs and several people uses a kiddie pool to put sand in. I would also not give it an opportunity to run out because I would put it in it's cage before I leave out the door/room. My moms cat use to scratch up her couch all the time. She ended up taking the furniture out of the family room and just leaving the TV so the animals can roam free when with can watch tv on the floor while playing with them.

I have talked to the breeder and she has refered some cages (like the multi level cat condos) were you can attach more cages to make it bigger. She also refered places were I can get like forest items to make it appear more wildlife in the cage.

I am still researching their diet but I know they will need insects, boiled eggs, fruit, veggies, nuts, mice, raw meat, high quality dog food (like Mazuri Wild Canid), etc.

And, I'm a night person. I haven't gotten any sleep this night and always stay up till at least 3am. I work my schedule to allow my nights free. I can get sleep in the morning when everyone wakes up. LOL

I probably won't get one for a year.. I'm just wishing and researching for myself at the moment
