up around fairview i noticed that a few of them have rolly polly's inside( how did they get in there??) Mom soaks them and cuts them in half then fries them.

I have never gotten one with a rolly polly, but maybe around the soil the stem may have had a crack in it???? I have seen ants though! I do the same as your mom, I first clean the outside, cut them in half, make sure they are clean in the middle and soak them in the salt water! Might sound bad but nothing worse than picking veggies from your garden!

exactly. I have no problems with a little dirt or grit.

OmG- I love them- to early here! When I lived in Iowa- I saw more up there than I had ever seen One guy told me he found 96 pounds of them!
I love them! I can't seem to find them around here any more!!!So I probably wont get any this year!! Darn

No, the flavor is so much better than the white caps, they have a taste of their own, oh and yes they look like a sponge and are shaped like a Christmas tree. I love to eat them, but the hunt is the best!
