I have never gotten one with a rolly polly, but maybe around the soil the stem may have had a crack in it???? I have seen ants though! I do the same as your mom, I first clean the outside, cut them in half, make sure they are clean in the middle and soak them in the salt water! Might sound bad but nothing worse than picking veggies from your garden!
