Default Anyone have a cocker spaniel?

Anyone have one? I think they are so beautiful!

How do you like him/her (temperament-wise)? How big is he/she? Anything else interesting?

Just curious!

Yeah- I don't like the other ones (English, maybe?) either.

My grandma used to have one (his name was Rusty) and he was so nice too!

I have an american cocker...she is SUPER sweet. but kinda ditzy she was super hyper and destructive as a pup...but as an adult (after about 18 months old) has been the best dog. she still gets into stuff all the time (I had a thread the other day about this) and still very ditzy, but the sweetest, most submissive dog in the world. she cracks us up because she can be laying next to us, we can move her and she just stays however we move her. we mess with her like that all the time if we roll her over, she stays like that...legs up in the air...until we ask her to move.

she was very easy to potty train but I have heard the opposite about cockers. I have heard the "dribble" a lot. I have never had that problem with her..but literally, I have had people amazed by that. she does, however, sniff the spot where she was sitting if she gets excited..it's like she thinks she may have dribbled. it is very funny It was easy to teach her lots of things...fetch or "go find it", "drop it", "high five", "sit", "down", "stay", "here", etc. very smart...but ditzy LOL

here is a pic of her. she is so beautiful...and LOVES to be groomed!!!!

oh, and I should mention that they get ear infections REALLY easy. their ears are long and heavy, so they do not get much air to them. I have to clean her ears daily with solution of vinegar and water...and she still gets infections sometimes. I keep the medicine on hand. it's almost impossible to keep infections from her.

Are all cockers destructive as puppies? Also, by "dribble" do you mean some cockers kinda... um.. leak pee??

Oh my gosh Mandee...that looks like my beloved Kinzee. He was the last dog that I had before I got Murfee. I LOVED him so much. I can only say good things about my cocker. He was on the small side and lovable and sweet. he loved the grandkids. Was a great traveler. He also went camping with us. On the negative...he had ear problems all the time and also major skin allergies. We were constantly at the vet with both of those problems. It broke my heart when I lost him.

yep...that's what I mean

I have had her since she was 7 weeks old...she is now 6 years old. I got her when my daughter was a baby and they are so close!!! she sleeps with my daughter every night. granted...I usually wake up to chewed up papers, etc. in her room but my daughter will not go to bed without her

I don't know if all are destructive as puppies...but I have never met one that wasn't. I NEVER wanted a cocker. swore I would never own one cuz I never liked any that I met. but when I saw Daisy (looking for a yorkie), I fell in love with her. she totally stole my heart

thankfully, Daisy does not have skin allergies...BUT she chews on her feet constantly and there is nothing we can do to keep her from it. vets tell me to give her benedryl but that doesnt work at all. she doesn't hurt herself...but it irritates me we just aren't sure why she does that. and yep...those ear problems!!!! ugh!!!!!

I'm sure this is an obvious that you've already considered but just in case... Does she have any wheat or corn in her diet? We had a Lhasa Poo who had constant ear infections and chewed his feet and it turned out he had a wheat/corn allergy I changed his dog food and he never had a problem again.

no, we are actually very picky about food...and from owning danes in the past, I learned to stay away from those ingredients but you do bring up a good point...i wonder if it is something like that...maybe a food ingredient?? well...i'm not sure. we have changed foods a couple of times over the last few years and she has been doing this for a long time...so who knows. I will look into it tho!!!!

I have an American Cocker Spaniel. Her name is Peppi. She is black/gold and is going to be turning 10 next monday.

Peppi was never destructive as a puppy and to this day still isn't.

She isn't an overly hyper cocker spaniel like some I have seen but I think that is because she has taken on my laid back personality.
She loves people and other dogs, just a regular social butterfly. And she is so smart, she picks up on tricks quickly and loves learning.
My family grew up with cockers so they have been in the family for awhile.
I will probably always have a cocker in my life, I love this breed!!

Oh and when she was younger she did dribble urine, only when she got excited, she quickly grew out of it. But for potty training, she trained real quick.

Cockers are known for ear infections but the funny thing is Peppi has never had an ear infection her whole life. Even my vet is amazed at this.
She does have some skin allergies, she just gets dry skin often.

All in all, I would say cocker spaniels are generally a healthy, intelligent, loving breed.
