Pitbull-type rips out stomach of little dog

I am not a fan of this breed, you can say they are cute all you want, but I have had several very bad run ins with pitbulls during my life. My new neighbor has one, that I am terrified of because of the behavior it has shown towards me and my children. A lot of people have said it's not the breed itself, it is the owner who is at fault. Sounds like a pitbull owner should have to get a permit and be tested about training information before a person can own one. Would this fix the problems with this breed?

I work in law enforcement/corrections, and pepper spray does work on dogs.

Although in theory that's a good idea, do you really expect the people already breaking the law by fighting dogs, abusing them, ect (the things that do make dogs vicious) to abide by that? I highly doubt it

No but it would take care of the people like my neighbor who is a pretty nice guy that has this mean pitbull which I'm sure he doesn't abuse or fight the dog. The problem with pitbulls is even though other dogs can be just as aggressive, let's say a chihuahua, doesn't have the ability to harm a person or another animal like pits do. We all know that some little dogs bite, you never hear about it in the news because other dogs aren't usually able to kill the person or child (as per recent story in the news in my area) they bite. Pitbulls are built for biting down and holding on.

No. The ability of pitbulls to "lock on" with their jaws is a misperception that people refuse to let go of! The jaws of a pitbull are built just as any other dog's jaw...there is no 'enzyme', no special mechanism that would make a pitbull's jaws 'lock'. They're DOGS, not alligators! What a pitbull does have is strength, tenacity, and determination. When he grasps onto an object, he will hang on due to these bully tough characteristics. And as any well-trained pitbull can demonstrate, will let go just as easily.

Pit bulls are just as predictable as any other dog. Most people who say that a dog is "unpredictable" simply don't understand dogs. They believe the stories of people who were "just petting the dog, and suddenly it went crazy and bit me!" In the majority of these cases, the victim simply doesn't understand or has missed canine warning signs. Only a handful of dogs are really "crazy" and unpredictable. Many of these dogs have never had training of any kind. Some of these dogs have mental disorders that cause their unpredictable behavior. But this sort of behavior is not usually seen in pit bulldogs. In fact, the canine disorder known as "Rage Syndrome", where a dog attacks a person suddenly and without warning, is documented primarily in cocker spaniels and retrievers - very common family dogs.

I think ONLY RESPONSIBLE people should own dogs - whatever the breed - period. Anyone can turn a sweet poodle or pomeranian into a raving, violent dog. I think there are some people who should not be allowed to own pets because they are irresponsible and abusive. It's so sad when people own dogs or cats but literally treat them like "animals" (or worse) when they should be treated like a member of the family. It makes me sick when I see someone kick their dog or scream at them at slap them in public. I've called hte cops COUNTLESS times on people for that.

Since we have all agreed to disagree, let's not fight. You're all awesome people with great opinions and just remember ... we are all here for the same reason and we all share the same love ... a love for Yorkies!

People who want to own pets should have to pass a test...Like when you want to drive a car you need a license...

I am not looking to fight with ANYONE on this post...I am just trying to make people aware that PITBULLS are not KILLERS...Any dog can kill...It might not be documented/discussed as much as the larger dog attacks but it can happen...I came across an article about a Pomeranian that killed a 6 month old child...So small dogs CAN kill...

I prob sound repetitive on my posts, but I just think people should become more knowledgeable of a certain breed before they are ready to do away with it

I agree with you. I don't think any breed should be done away with or destroyed. That, in my opinion, is a narrow viewpoint. Every living creature has the potential to hurt and kill - it just seems to be more popular talking about pitts as killers than any other breed.

I know, they have SO much fur!! When I was first looking to get a dog, I though poms were sooooo cute (and they are) but the shedding turned me away. I love Maltese and Yorkies because they don't shed and they're so easy to brush and keep clean.

The next time I seen that dog they gave it a summer cut and shaved him. He looked funny. He was sooo tiny after that. LOL
