Be careful about using Vodka. With your luck, your fish is a lush and will be needing the services of GAA - Goldfish Alcoholics Annonymous. I can only imagine what their 10 steps would be. :lol tears:

I don't own a Fish but I did take my daughters little hamster in when she was in Pain (dieing) to be PTS and also a Rat she owned who was Really old and Dying.
So YES if I did have one, I would Find the Best and most humane way to PTS as needed.

Well I think its completely different for a hamster or a rat. I 2 would bring it in. But a goldfish be serious, who is gonna.
I think its right to find a humane way to PTS the goldfish. And I think that the OP did her best.
Can you tell me of a humane to PTS a goldfish????

No and I have read about euthanizing fish on fish keeping sites before. I had heard of using alka selser but never alcohol. I have never euthanized one though

Well lets hope you never have to. :D . No matter what, the loss of a live creature, is a sort of sad occasion I think for most of us. Wither we had an attachment or not.:)

The best and most humane way I have read is a mixture of Clove oil and tank water..

OK, I wasn't going to get into this thread, and seems I'm late-coming as condolences are appropriate, now. And, I'll confess to having flushed more than a few fish in my day (post mortem). I, too, used to think of fish as just a food source; or pet that provides us with calming beauty. However, I saw something on Animal Planet several years past that has forever changed how I look at fish. I used to enjoy fishing with my hubby; but, now I can't put a hook into a fish's mouth any more than I could shoot Bambi. And, YES, I do eat meat. I suppose I could hunt if it meant survival. Anyway, I digress.... The clip on AP showed two lion-head goldfish. One was black, and the other was gold. At first glance, I noticed the gold one looked like he was dying, or had serious swim bladder problems, as it stayed to the middle of the tank sort of on its side. Then, someone's hand sprinkled a bit of fish food on the surface. The black fish swam under the gold one, and gently carried it to the surface to eat! Now, I guess it can be construed as species survival; but, wouldn't you think the black one wouldn't give a fin about whether the gold one lived, IF they're just autonomous creatures?

Fish have brains but not cognitive ability. Their actions are the result of instinct and memory....not analytical thought processes.

Not that your betta isn't the most intelligent betta ever...;) ..but bettas are territorial he sees your finger as an intruder and/or thinks it's time to eat.

Has anyone ever stepped on an ant and killed it? If you watch ants, when an ant is hurt, other ones will pick it up and carry it off, but, yet, most of us kill ants...??
