The camera I always use (the Fuji) has a 8.1 mpx and works better than the 10mpx point and shoot camera we have. I was told the higher OPTI zoom you have the better too.

I agree Optical Zoom is important. Digital zoom doesn't mean anything. You're better off cropping later.

Just as important as the MP (6,8,10, whatever) is the ZOOM. (3x,4x,10x).

Back in the spring, I bought a Canon PowerShot A630 for less than $200. It's a 8MP, 4X Zoom. I can buy both a telefoto and zoom lens for it, so there are other options.

I had a Canon 35mm for more than 20 years and adored it, so giving up film was hard, but ... I think this is an awesome camera, especially for the money. It also has fantastic battery life (using Energizer 2500 rechargables), is small but not postage-stamp-sized AND it has a viewfinder. (That's very important when you're shooting say fireworks. Here's some of my better shots.
