I'm afraid to try the airborne because it's so expensive and I don't do well with flavors. Can you put it in juice so you don't have to taste it as much? I just hate to spend $8 and not be able to choke it down.

I've BEEN to the doctor (going on week 3 of this) and all they gave me was nasal spray. Unless it's an infection (strep, sinus) they won't give you anything because it won't help. This is all just a terrible virus. Mine keeps moving so it was sinus/headache/dizzy and now it's sore throat/earache. Plus a fever that comes and goes. It sucks. I used to be able to sleep off a cold in 1-2 days and be fine, but everyone has this and it just lingers and moves from head to chest and back for weeks!!! The dr said Dayquil/Nyquill, Robitussin CF if I start to cough, and AFRIN nasal spray. I bought generics of everything on her list for like $10 total. I haven't used it all yet, mostly just advil for the pain, but I didn't want to have to send my husband out at 2am because I needed it. The nasal spray is great though. You can get the Afrin OTC or they will give you a prescription for a steroid nasal spray.

I hope everyone feels better soon.

We are getting this ice storm tomorrow so I'm just planning to sleep through it!

Erin~ I'm sorry you're feeling so badly too. I don't know if you have Trader Joe's there, but I think they sell (and so does Costco or Walmart) Airborne for less than $8. Sometimes, even some of the bigger chains sell it for less (sale) during the cold and flu season, like Long's or maybe RiteAid or Walgreen. Look online at the websites to see their weekly sale items before you or your dh go out. And yes, you COULD put it in juice if you wanted; just use a fairly thin juice; not a vegetable or tomato juice.

I do know from vast experience that when you have a really bad cough that prevents you from sleeping that a cough medicine with codeine in it (avail. only by prescription) is THE BEST cough suppressant of all. Most of the time you don't need anything that strong, but there's nothing worse than coughing and coughing all night long (or even all day long and not being able to stop). A lot of people can't tolerate or are allergic to codeine though....I hope you're feeling better soon~ rest is really the best thing, LOL....I figure I'll just dose myself up and sleep thru any illness I have, hehe....

I would NEVER recommend Zicam nasal spray!!!!!!! I used it as directed a year ago when I had a bad cold and it destroyed my sense of smell and taste. I only sprayed it once in each nostril. Two hours later, no taste, no smell. If a skunk sprayed in the same room as me, I could not smell it. I cant smell or taste if my food is spoiled or smell smoke if the house is on fire. the only thing I can taste is sweet, salty, bitter and tangy. The wonderful taste of chocolate has been replaced by a disgusting distorted "flavor" that I cant even begin to describe. All meats "taste" like cardboard and I couldnt tell you the difference between the flavors of an apple or an orange. My favorite perfume now "smells" gross and has the same "smell" as hairspray. The wonderful flavors of Coke, Pepsi, peanut butter, hot bread and butter are so horrible now. I cant smell my horses, my dog grooming products, fresh air after a rain, sun dried laundry, orange blossums in March, my Moms sage dressing, sented candles, zip.Sometimes I feel like my life is not worth living anymore. It is a joke to go out to eat.And the best part is, it is permanent!!!!!!!!!!! There is nothing the doctors can do to bring it back. So please dont use this product!!!!!!!!!! It may or may not affect you but it is not worth the chance. Stick to Vicks salve!!!!!

I see others have already mentioned it but MUCINEX is wonderful! There are different formulas for depending on what you need. The trick is to take it continuously (every 12 hours or whatever that formula says) for a few days. It really works. My 13 year old daughter was in bed ALL day Sunday and came home from school at noon on Monday because of this same mess. I know hers is allergy stuff though because we were out in the wind all day on Saturday. She was gagging and coughing Sunday and finally threw up all that drainage late in the afternoon. She had a fever all day too and it came back mid-Monday so I was wondering if it was turning into an infection but she feels better today (but still congested). If yours is the flu, I don't have much advice because none of us have ever had it but allergies kick our butts from time to time. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

I'm sorry you are feeling sick! I just went through this for 3 weeks. I had bronchitis and a terrible cold. The only thing that helped me was a personal vaporizer w/vicks in it and tons of medication.

I hope you feel better soon, I know it stinks

OH NO!!!! Soooo sorry you are sick!!!!! Please get well soon!

My husband tried Mucinex (sp?) last year when he was sick and it worked wonders....I am not certain which one he got, I think there are several Mucinex pills.

My friend sent this to me via email yesterday...she said it really works??!!! It would be worth a try!!!!

VICKS VAPORUB...TRY IT, IT WORKS

I wish I'd known this when my family was Young during winter colds and coughs.

I am going to try it myself.

Share with young Parents.

Isn't life strange.

When we had a Lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how The foot soles
can absorb oils.

Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20
minutes you can 'taste' it.

Some of us have used Vicks Vaporub for years for
everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many
body parts in between.

But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it
works 100% of the time although the scientists
at the Canada Research Council (who discovered it)
aren't sure why.

To stop night-time coughing in a child (or adult as
we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously
on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover
with socks.

Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in
about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many
hours of relief.

Works 100% of the time and is more effective in
children than even very strong prescription cough
medicines.

In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting
and they will sleep soundly.

I heard the head of the Canada Research Council
describe these findings on the part of their scientists
when they were investigating the effectiveness and
usage of prescription cough medicines in children as
compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.

Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up
this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids
often do more harm than good due to the chemical
makeup of these strong drugs; so, I listened.

It was a surprise finding and found to be more
effective than prescribed medicines for children at
bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming
effect on sick children who then went on to sleep
soundly.

Polly tried it on herself when she had a very deep
constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and
it worked 100%!

She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped
her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me,
this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few second uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours
every night that she used it.

If you have grandchildren, pass it on.

If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be
absolutely amazed by the effect.

Another email from my friend

I found some articles, and with flu season I wanted to share them.

May I just say... Oregano is AWESOME. Antibiotics can not kill
viruses.. oregano can.

I am focusing on oregano, (although I have others on my shelf)
because I have witnessed first hand this year it's ability to knock
out infections that would have required antibiotics.

Here is some more info I came across....I do not save all the
details, so just do a search and you will find all the info you want.
For my little ones that can not swallow pills, I use an elderberry
product called Sambucol It's studies consistantly showed the
flu duration cut in half when using it.

http://www.prevention.com/cda/article/beat-the-

Here is some info on Oregano and the flu

Nature's herbal apothecary takes care of this nuisance with the most
powerful cold buster ever, Oregano oil from wild grown Mediterranean
Oregano. As an immune stimulant, Oregano is king of herbs as proven
by Polish researchers who tested 70 varieties of plants and found
Oregano to be the one with the most significant immune boosting
powers. The efficacy of Oregano does not stop at boosting the immune
system. It is possibly the most powerful antibiotic, antiviral and
antifungal remedy available.

As most of us know, an antibiotic prescription given at the doctor's
office is useless against viral infection, which is what causes colds
and the flu. The flu virus mutates constantly. Although labs cook up
an antiviral cocktail containing several previous flu viruses,
chances are slim that those same viruses will attack again and thus
your body will not have resistance to new ones lurking around the
corner.

Daily doses of oregano oil (three drops three times a day) will help
keep your immune system strong enough to fight off most cold and flu
viruses. Should one sneak in, conduct a full frontal attack by
getting lots of sleep, drinking plenty of water and taking frequent
dosages of oregano oil to stop it in its tracks. Hepatitis and Herpes
are two other viral infections which have responded well to treatment
with Oregano oil.

Oregano oil also works as an antibiotic, meaning it doesn't just
protect against viruses but also against bacteria. It has been shown
in lab tests to be as effective as one of the strongest antibiotics
(Vancomycin) in killing staph, E.coli and other bacteria. It does
this without creating mutant strains of drug resistant bacteria and
it has none of the debilitating side effects of pharmaceutical
antibiotics. For AIDS and cancer patients, diabetics and those
bedridden in hospital, oregano oil is a defensive weapon against
potentially deadly bacteria. It is easy to take and effective against
many known forms of pathogens.

Olive oil is used to dilute pure oregano oil because, in its pure
form, the oil is far too caustic. This is primarily due to the
predominant phenol carvacrol, which accounts for a large percentage
of the composition of oregano oil. Please beware of taking the pure
essential oil as it could harm you. It must be properly diluted to be
effective and safe. Tests show that most people respond best to one
part oregano to four parts olive oil. Extra strength products are not
more effective. They are difficult for the body to assimilate North
Americans suffer from a virtual epidemic of candida infection.

Helps many things like...Candida albicans is a form of fungus that
occurs naturally in the gut. Antibiotics kill some of the good flora
in the intestinal tract. This allows the candida to multiply
unchecked. Candida feeds on sugar and refined grains. With the North
American diet being high in both of these, candida quickly multiplies
and ends up in the bloodstream. Nail fungus, thrush, skin disorders,
vaginal yeast, allergies and chronic fatigue are only a few of the
annoying symptoms caused by candida infection. Oregano oil is also
effective to treat fungal infections.

Do not confuse the medicinal wild Mediterranean oregano for what is
sometimes called oregano in the marketplace. What you find on the
grocery store shelf is usually Spanish marjoram and does not share
the true wild oregano's therapeutic qualities. The best therapeutic
oregano grows wild in the Mediterranean and has been known since
Hippocrate's time to be a powerful medicinal plant.

Stave off winter and experience the multitude of uses for oregano to
enjoy greatly improved health!

You use it by placing a certain amount under the tongue (gets into your system faster), or you can put the drops into a small amount of juice.

An excellent book on Oregano Oil is 'The Cure is in The Cupboard' by Dr. Cass Ingram. You can check it out at the library.

Oregano oil has many, many uses. It does make a difference on the brand/kind.

Wow, that's AWFUL! I've never heard of that happening, but I haven't ever even seen the nasal spray (probably b/c I would never use a spray anyhow). I've used the Zicam swabs only....they didn't seem to have any weird effect on me. I'm not sure that they helped either, but at least I didnt' lose my sense of smell! YIKES! When I have a bad cold, and I can't smell, I don't even want to eat anything b/c you can't taste it. I feel so bad for you...there's not ANYTHING they can do about it? And it won't ever come back? That's really terrible!!!You poor thing!

Thanks!!!! Sorry for the pitty party, but if I can warn people of the possible side effects, it will be worthwhile. There has been a class action law suit that was won and there are more on the horizon. Hopefully, it will be taken off the market as it is still being sold.

I have only had this problem of no smell/taste for a year. I dont know how I will manage this for the rest of my life.

thanks again, Lynn

Dealing with the Sinus:

1. If you have a runny nose or clogged sinus passages... don't suck on candy or cough drops of any sort. The sucking actually pulls the mucus down the back of your throat and gets into your lungs... and makes things waaay worse.

Not to be picky, but when you swallow, things do NOT go into your lungs, unless you aspirate and it goes down your trachea instead of your esophagus. Normally when you suck, you swallow; and it goes into your esophagus into your DIGESTIVE tract, not your RESPIRATORY tract. Unless, you happened to be coughing aggressively and aspirated it into your trachea and into your lungs. It is true that when things go down into your lungs it can set you up for a bacterial infection, but normal, active, usually healthy individuals don't usally get aspiration pneumonias; it's usually physically compromised people that happens to.
I'm not a nurse or anything but I looked into it for my mom, she's suffered really bad for years.

The swallowing action causes suction against the the thick mucus sitting in your sinus cavity (that's why you can't breath), the suction slowly pulls the thick mucus down your throat.

There are usually 3 outcomes for the mucus; 1. spit 2. swallow or 3. breath

Though the mucus is broken loose from swallowing, the avarage human spends more time breathing than swallowing... which leaves the wind pipe wide open.

The lungs themselves don't produce phlem (mucus), it slides down there from your nose and your body actually uses coughing to clean the lungs. The agressive action breaks up the phlem (mucus) so it can be expelled.

No worries about "being picky", we're all here to share and learn.

Thanks so much for all of your help you guys I appreciate it so much! I am better now, but was sick for almost a week if you include when the sore throat started last Friday. I think I did end up getting the flu though. The night I started this thread, I got VERY achy and was running fever (couldn't even get out of bed). I still have a horrible cough and am blowing my nose I don't know how many times a day My poor nose is sooo sore and chapped, I look like Rudolph! lol.

Anyway, I'm back and hopefully am over all the really bad stuff, except the bad cold still and the cough Now if only my husband doesn't get this stuff Big hugs to all and thanks again for all of your great suggestions, they were MUCH appreciated!
