| HELP! What do older people like to get for Christmas Here in my library I have three volunteers. A woman that is 74, another woman that is 50, and a man that is 84. I have run out of ideas for Christmas presents. I can't give them gift cards again this year! Does anyone have a suggestion? The fifty year old is no problem I will just buy her something that reminds me of her dog but the other two stump me. HELP! |

| if it's a woman you can go to bed and bath, and get a nice gift basket filled with soaps, lotions, and bath salts... some nice candles..

| Here's my idea.... take a decorative jar or box and fill it with slips of paper on which you have written nice things about them and cut them up kind of like fortune's in fortune cookies. You write up something telling them that everyday they should pull out a "fortune" to remind them how special they are to you. You can even get other people to join in and help you with their thoughts about the person. |

| Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with gift cards (even though you said you didn't want to do that again). A lot of people, especially those that are older, don't want or need more STUFF. You could get gift cards for places like Walmart, Target, Starbucks, etc. that I'm sure would be much appreciated and actually used.

| I agree. Most older people really appreciate gift cards, because they already have so many things. This gives them an opportunity to pick what the really need.

| If you give them gift cards to places like WalMart or Target, they will most likely spend it on their grandkids instead of themselves. Find out what other hobbies they have or where they like to eat, so the gift card is specific just for them. Or you could get them a box of candy or chocolate from a chocolatier in your town, they could share it with their friends when they have company.

| Gift cards to restaurants are always nice. Some would like to go out to eat but are on fixed incomes, so this would be very nice.

| ROFL....that sounded so funny! But it's true. And a lot of older people lived on relatively fixed incomes so maybe a gift card to a popular restaurant; even if it doesn't pay for an entire meal for two (if it does, so much the better), at least it would defray the cost. Or maybe a membership to Costco or Sam's Club or AAA (the Automobile Assn) for a year.
