It instinct. Their little paws are going even before we put them in, it is so funny. Of course they have learn it initially but they start paddling once they realize they are in water. We also put them in without their vests on to make sure they know to swim without their jackets on so they won't panic should they fall in.

We've never had to do anything to their ears afterwards. Fortunately we've not had any issues.

Thanks for sharing that -- they really looked like they enjoyed their swim. Love their little life jackets. I should get one of those for Ben, maybe he would like the pool more. He loves to get splashed and tries to catch all the splashes in his mouth, but he doesn't like being in the pool. I had to keep making him go in to show him how to go to the steps to get out. He can't quite get out, but he can make it to the top step where he can stand with his head out of water. At least that might save his life if he were to fall in unexpectedly.

I really want to get a hot tub too but maybe for now I will shop for the life vest.

I think that the life vest will give him a bit more of a sense of security. We do still have them swim without one just to have them experience it just in case they should fall in. The green one was from petsmart (xxs) at 14.99.
