| tangled and matted coat I have a 5 month old yorkie and can't seem to keep her coat looking nice, it wants to tangle and matt so bad. Does anyone else have this problem? This is our first yorkie so I'm learning.

| The only thing that I have found that works is lots of brushing. I brush Deiter 3 times a day and that has helped alot. The most trouble I have is from his harness. So I have ordered one from Chattiesmom ( I think that is her name) she makes silk ones and I hear that they don't matt. |

| I comb Lacy at least twice a day. Daily brushing and combing is essential with yorkies to keep them matt free. I recommend finding a good brush to start with and also a stainless steel comb. The brush will get bigger tangles out and then go back over with the finer comb to get the smaller tangles out. And make sure you comb through the hair all the way to the skin to get any tangles starting there...tangling at the skin will matt up quick. Regular bathing to keep the hair clean helps a lot too. You might want to post this in the grooming section to get some more responses

| I brush my yorkies 3 times a day, comb them at least once a day and bath them once a week. It keeps most of the knots away. |

| I would also reccomend to brush your yorkie every single day. One of my Yorkie I would have to brush 2 times a day to keep him tidy but my little Mandla I only have to brush 1 time a day. It all depends on what kind of coat they have. So at least 1 time a day can go for every coat type. It is also important to keep the coat clean. A dirty coat will tangle more. If you bathe and blowdry your Yorkie once a week it will make a lot of diffirence. Bathe more often if neccisary. a)But before you bathe, be sure to groom all the knots and tangles out of the coat because if you bathe the dog with the knots and tangles it will become worse. b)If it is too difficult to brush the knots and tangles out before the bath it is possible to also brush the knots and tangls out in the bath if you put a lot of conditioner in the coat and then brush it. After you have brushed him then rinse and then blowdry. But I prefer to use method a) probably because my dogs never get that matted that I have to use method b). Also, the coat often seems to tangle less if you always blowdry the coat after bath. But make sure not too use to hot air, it can burn them. I often ajust my blowdryer to Cold Air before I use it on my dogs. And the last thing, use a good conditioner! It can make all the diffirence. I use Bigroom Silk on puppies but on dogs with long coat I use #1 All System Bitonical Conditioner, it is much better but also more expensive. Yorkie owners, I know, that have trouble with tangling coats in their Yorkie have starte to use #1 All system conditioner and the coat then tangles alot less. Edited: For got to mention, it is also good to use something like Biogroom Anytime Coat Care, Leave in Moisturizer, when you brush the coat. It helpst keep the tangles away and also conditions the coat. There may also be other brands that you can use but this is what I have found to work the best with my Yorkies Last edited by Chico; 08-25-2007 at 05:01 AM. |

| I purchased it at Petsmart, they have alot to chose from. Really didn't know one from another so I just read labels and decided on the Perfect Coat brand. Where do you purchase Minksheen?

| I have found that with a puppy, bathing every 4 days ,using a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner helps. Also using a good isinis bursh is very important. It really helps with that puppy fuzz. http://www.cachebeauty.com/isinis.htm

| Great replies above. You also want to make sure never to brush when the coat is totally dry. Use a mister bottle with a mixture of conditioner and water, or buy a grooming spray to use. You can probably go to the Yorkie Showing section and get some other great tips from the people who show their Yorkies.
