| I FINALLY Found Him!!! I found my new pupppy but have to wait another 6 weeks before I get him. In the meantime, any suggestions on what I should start doing to prep before he comes home?? (i.e.- what kind of crate to get, litter box or weeweepads, collars, leashes, kind of food, brushes, shampoo, toothbrush- oh and how about finding a vet and how soon I should bring him to one....) I'm going to have a lot of questions- he's gonna be my first puppy!!! Sherry |

| Congrats on the new puppy! You will want a large cate or an xpen to keep the puppy in. You will want a smaller crate for traveling. Some other things you need is the food the breeder has been feeding to start. A brush, toothbrush and toothpaste, a bed, some baby blankets, some bowls for the food and water, peepads, shampoo and conditioner. I use Chris Christensen but you could get something from Petsmart to start you out with. also get some toys and things for the puppy to chew on.

| Thanks- any recommendations on the brands for shampoos/conditioners and even for crates? I heard some people can be allergic to doggie shampoos....Can you use baby shampoo on them? Someone told me they did for their dogs and it was ok. Or are there hypoallergenic shampoos that smell good? Also, when potty training- would I be able to put the weepads in a litter box and train him to go in there or should I put the pads in his crate to begin with? |

| Lots of people either go with Chris Christensen or Pet Silk. I'm probably going to go with the latter myself. I know some are able to get away with using human shampoo on their dogs, but I wouldn't do it... just because the ph of human hair is different from dogs. The weepads in a litter box is what I'm doing with my puppy. I wouldn't put a weepad in the crate because that might confuse him. With mine, I've been watching her and taking her to the litter box a lot.

| If your going to cate train him to go outdoors you dont want to put a peepad in the crate. You want him to learn to hold it. If you are going to peepad train then you want to ut one in the crate. You can put the peepad in a litter bin if you want. For shampoo and conditioner I use Chris Christensen shampoo conditioner and Ice on Ice. You can find these by googling Chris Christensen. You can use baby shampoo for a while if you want but I dont recommend using it long term. Human hair has a different PH than dog hair.

| Well, I live in a condo on the 5th floor- so I'm not sure if training him to go outside at first will be ok. I was thinking of training him to a litter box and then slowly going outside but I don't know if he'll be able to hold it that long before he gets outside? Another idea I thought was that I do have a balcony so I was going to put the litter box out there, but then I didn't know if that would be too dangerous... |

| wow! congratulations on the new pup! you're in the right place to find out about yorkies! i found this site so very helpful with my tucker a lot of what i did, though, came from trial and error. i think everyone's situation is different and you have to do what works for you and your pup. you live in an apartment and i live in the country, so what works for me might not work for you. i will say that it gets better as they get older some things i think they just outgrow. tucker is almost 6 months now, and we've both learned a lot! i can't imagine life without him! my advice is to use the info here as a guideline and use what works. good luck with your new puppy! oh, and take lots of pictures!!! keep us updated! |
