| Won't eat her food Daisy is showing some attitude already. I have always had obedient dogs (goldens, pit bulls and found or shelter mutts) and spoiled cats. I knew it would be hard not to spoil a cute little dog like this. But I swear today she said "You're not the boss of me!!" I have only had her for 10 days. In those ten days she has had some biscuit one time and a tiny bit of meat from a Quiz-no's sandwich. That should not have been enough people food to make her abandon dog food. She has been eating what the breeder gave me--Purina Puppy Chow switched over to Iams puppy food. The breeder gave me puppy food for large dogs in a sample packet and it was really big for her. For the last two days she hasn't wanted to eat her food. She would eat a few kibbles if I fed them to her at first (don't spoil the dog, don't spoil the dog...) but now she just looks at me like I had given her a bowl of rocks. She is still very active and has an appetite (she says) for everything I eat, but I don't give it to her. Yesterday I mixed in some canned dog food and she wouldn't eat it. Today I poured some chicken broth on her food and she had a few bites but not much. She does pick and eat logan berries in the yard and will eat a fig if she finds one but no dog food. She has been pooping everyday. How much does a little 3 pound puppy eat at once? A tablespoon? When should I worry? I want to put her on raw food, I can't remember the brand but it comes in little frozen discs and I feed it to my cats. I am out but should be getting more Wednesday. I hope she will eat that more readily, but it still doesn't smell like the people food she really wants. How can I slowly switch her over when she won't eat her kibble? Loved by Alfie & Evie Donating Member | You should post this in the health section... you will get tons of replies that way that will be extra helpful. (PM admin to move the thread for you). But for now I will tell you my Alfie was the same way... and Spoiled just like your Daisy!! LOL My vet said, try wet Iams puppy food as he was so little he didnt like the kibble kind... Alfie has switched around foods often, but we always keep with puppy Iams and rotate back and forth with Mushy Puppy wet food, mixed with Kibble, then with out.. then the Puppy chunky wet, mixed with Kibble then with out.. then back again... (I even give it a little sprinkle of Grated Cheese sometimes when he is being really picky).. the vet says he will eat when he is hungry but never let him go more than 36 hours with out anything and in this case give him plain cooked chicken breast and stay away from any fatty human food... VERY bad for the puppy. oh... and you mentioned berries and figs, I am not sure about this but I read once that Raisins and grapes are super bad for dogs so be careful with that stuff... not sure though...

| My dog is 3 pounds as well, but he is full grown and I give him Canidae All Stages food. It is really small pellets made for smaller dogs, he usually eats about 10-15 pellets in the morning and then again at night. But he is constantly eating human food as well (which i try to not give him as much). He also LOVES Cesar soft dog food...he goes nuts for it..you could try that... Because you have only had him for a short amount of time, it is probably going to get him some getting used to the new food, environment, etc. He is pooping and running around still so that is good. If he starts getting lathargic give him some Nutrical Puppy...so his blood sugar level doesn't drop! Good Luck!

| Quick response!! I was just looking back to see it I could remove it since it wasn't a picture post. I didn't mean to post there. I was going to put it in general discussion but will take your advice and put it in health. I wonder if it is the high sugar content in raisins and grapes that make them bad for little dogs. Could cause a rush of insulin then a crash as they come off the sugar. If that is indeed the reason then the logan berries and figs shouldn't hurt her as they aren't very sweet. Anyway I didn't see any ill effects, I was worried about loose stool but none so far. Daisy doesn't like the food wet either. But it is good to know that she can go all day with out eating much. I would recognize hypoglycemia, but I wanted to hear from someone else that it was okay. Beth |

Loved by Alfie & Evie Donating Member | I bought this too... PetSmart has it... makes you feel better to know that they have something when they are giving you a hard time with their eating... this is a good idea..

| i have a really hard time getting milu to eat as well, she doesn't like to eat dog food either. the raw food is good for their health. i feed milu nature's variety. it's good to feed it to both dogs and cats, so that will make it easier for you. milu used to eat VERY LITTLE, like a few kibbles a day, when i first got her. it's not good for them, she was very bony. even though she is still VERY picky eater now, she is not bony anymore, so i am not as worried. check to make sure your baby is not bony. and also make sure you talk to your vet to make sure that your baby is healthy and has no health problems.

| Eating again, little stinker... I mentioned before that Daisy will pick and eat logan berries outside and any figs she finds under the fig tree. Well last night I dropped a container of cooked broccoli. I thought I picked it all up but she found some and gobbled it up. After that she was intent of getting to the kitchen to look for more. I chopped up some broccoli and mixed it in with her food and she ate almost the whole dish. I explained to her that she can't be a vegetarian since she is a dog. This morning I gave her a different kind of canned dog food mixed with her food and she ate it so I guess she is over her hunger strike. I will be picking up the raw food tomorrow, I hope she likes it. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!! Last edited by beemidiwfe; 11-11-2008 at 04:57 PM. |

| Welcome to you and Daisy Well, howdy neighbor. I live in Rome - we are almost within rock throwing distance! If your little one wants "real food" then why not start home cooking? It is a wonderful way to provide nutritionally balanced meals using real healthy food and you avoid all of the scary food recalls. A three pound pup isn't going to eat very much at one time. My Emmitt is 3.25 lbs. at 6 months and his daddy is 3.5 lbs. at 4 1/2 years and neither one of them eats much at one time. On a side note, since your little one eats very small meals, I would make each kibble count and feed the highest nutritional quality food available. Unfortunately "grocery store" dog foods are not what they are advertised to be. Please, for the sake of Daisy, do some independent research on dog foods. |
