You all are cracking me up over here. Designer dogs are something now days they have in pet stores and the breeders try to do and get big bucks for. In years past those were called mutts and you were lucky if you could find them a home for free. How time flys and changes are made. How did we get to pay for something like that any takers on that ? But I have to say some mixes are cute.

The last dog we had was a long-haired Dachshund, Herbie. He was an absolute sweetheart. Recently, after a long, long time without a dog, we decided to get one, and a Dachshund was definitely high on my list because of Herbie. However, I have liked all the Yorkies I have met, so Yorkies were on my short-list as well. But at the same time, we had a rather rough time with Herbie late in his life because he developed a back problem and lost the use of his back legs. It required surgery to repair it, and while he eventually regained the ability to use his back legs, the surgery was expensive, and it was a very difficult time for us. Thus, I was somewhat wary of getting another purebred because of the higher incidence of this kind of health problem with them.

So when my daughter came across an ad for a rescue of a Dachshund/Yorkie mix puppy, a Dorkie, I figured this could give us the best of both breeds. At the same time, being a cross-breed may help reduce the chances of some of the problems unique to each breed. So we got her. Her name is Lala (pictured in the avatar).

To be honest, if I was going to make a dog from scratch, taking a characteristic from this breed and that to make the perfect dog, I cannot imagine the resulting dog being much different than Lala. She is an absolute delight. She is a mix of wire-haired Dachshund and Yorkie, so this makes her coat somewhat scruffy looking, a lot like a Yorkie with a puppy-cut, but that just adds to the cuteness factor. And when you look past the scruffiness, her facial features are the best of both breeds, the basic adorable look of a Yorkie but with slightly longer features. And she normally runs around with the one ear up, one ear down look. Her back is longer than a Yorkie's but shorter than a Dachshund.

She is also the most gregarious dog I have ever met. She is absolutely convinced that everyone in the world wants to pet her and wants to charge up to just about everyone she sees whether she knows them or not, and she would if she were not on leash. One friend commented that she was the most "intimate" dog she had ever met, often wanting to get right up to your face to interact with you. She is energetic and playful, but she also will just as easily sit with you for long periods of time. I absolutely adore this dog and could not imagine a better mix of characteristics in any pet.

Obviously, all animals are unique and I have never met another Dorkie, but if Lala turned out to be representative of Dorkies in general, I would never get another type of dog.

I have the same mixed breed puppy (Dorkie) and feel the exact same as you!! I love my little Sammie Bear he is just adorable, cute and smart. I would take another one of him in a heartbeat. I'll post pictures soon.

I have heard of a Dorkie, but never seen one. Oh they are adorable. I have 3 Yorkies, 1Yorkie/Poo and Candy, my dachshund. If candy wasn't fixed, they would make a wonderful pet, mixed with the Yorkies. Love them all.
