sorry, yall are so much ahead of me on tips, I dont have any that I think would help anyone but theres lots of great ones on here. I will use a few of them. I might even try to cut kizzys nails someday but it will be after I get a muzzle for her and put the knee highs on and probably make sure I wear a coat so my arms dont catch hell from scratches. shes like a wild cat when it comes to that. lol

Does anyone "scruff" their dog while trying to trim nails? I am still new to dog ownership, but the scruffing thing works really well on impatient cats, and so far, with the Yorkies too. It is best done w/2 people, one to scruff and support the dog, one to do the trimming.

My girls as soon as they see the trimmer or comb in my hand they come running. I sit on the floor & they fight to be 1st. I take 1 leg at a time with the trimmers, when they start to pull back with that leg, I grab another one. I keep doing this until I am done. If Misha isn't cooperative enough, I'll push her to the side and say back, Pipers turn. I'll do the same to Piper. They fight to get the attention with me on the floor. After words they know they get a yogurt drop, which they love.

What a crafty idea and a very good one especiall as one of my yorkies hates having his nails cut and has to go to the vet for this and even then every nail seems to bleed because he gets so upset and wriggles. I gave never heard of this tip before. Regards Hensleigh

wow, what a great thread...hmmm tips

1. I always carry a syringe in my purse for when I travel with Zoe. She doesn't seem to like to drink out of a bottle or dish when we are away from home so I syringe water in her mouth to keep her hydrated.

2. for photo sessions, I always hold a treat in front of the camera or a favorite squeaky toy to get her to look at the camera. If they pose enough all I have to say to her is 'sit up' and she will sit straight and look at the camera.

These tips are great!

I use the peanut butter/cheese smeared on the counter idea for Lola during her bath. I bathe her in the sink, so putting something on the counter is the perfect height and a great way to keep her mind off what I'm doing since she is still so nervous during bath time. I can bathe her whole body that way, then do her face last.

What is a yogurt drop? Just a drop of yogurt? If so, any particular kind?

yogurt drops are a treat... mine are made by Vitakraft. you can order them online from Petsmart... Petsmart shoudl carry them aswell... ours have been out of stock for about 3 months.. problems with the distributer.. but they are laylas FAVORITE treats!

Ooooh! Do they smell really bad? I think I got them for the cats once, and couldn't take the smell! They were hard little balls that looked almost like candy.

They kinda look like a hersey kiss. The girls like the white yogurt. They don't like the dark ones. They don't smell bad, they smell sweet.

Thanks for this tip. I "scruffed" Joey so that I could trim the hair around his eyes. So much easier.

i'm pretty sure it mean grabbing the hair that is by their mouth in a fist.. not too tight.. but tight enough that you have their attention and control over their head.. i do that when i need to clean layla's face or trim around her eyes... works GREAT!

Oh, I though it was holding them by scruff of their neck, like the mama dog does. Anyway it works. Joey doesn't have any chin hair to grab.
