Your Best Tips Do you have any tips that you think might be helpful to others? Maybe things that you read about or discovered on your own that really worked well for you and your Yorkie. My tip involves warming things in microwave. I always warm Joey's bath towel for about 30 seconds, and today little Joey was shivering, and I warmed up his blanky; instantly he stop shivering. WARNING: MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO WET SPOTS ON BLANKET OR TOWEL WHEN WARMING THEM AND ALWAYS TEST. Do you have any tips that you would like to share? Nancy |
Oh, I'll have to pass the microwave tip on to my mom. She lives in NC and her little Sophie is always cold. I was just giving my guys baths today so a grooming tip is fresh in my mind. After bathing while the conditioner is setting I take a flea comb to comb the goo out of their eyes. Them I spray the mustache with CC Ice on Ice and comb through really good with the flea comb. Sugar's hair is too thick so I use a fine tooth comb on him. This makes sure there is no goo or food debris left and the Ice on Ice helps keep new stuff from sticking and makes their mustaches lay nicer. Just make sure you cover the eyes and nose really well. I cover one eye and nose and do one side, then the same on the other. Good thread! I'll be checking back to see what everyone else has to add. |
this is for feeding.. if there are days when layla seems uninterested in food (and i'm sure all moms worry on those days) i put some of her kibble in her Kong and plug it with a treat.. layla thinks the food is a treat too because it came out of her Kong and she will eat it! also something we tried last night for the first time and LOVE!! layla has VERY dry skin and last night she had an oatmeal bath (i put oatmeal in a stocking and bathed her with it) and her skin is 99% better! im' sure if i do this every week it will just continue to improve! it's our new favorite thing!! |
I just love tips! My breeder told me that when putting their hair in a topknot; always slide your comb between rubber band and skin. This keeps the topknot from being too tight. Some dogs have been known to have the skin die and/or loss of hair from a too tight topknot. |
Great tips! I can't think of any of mine right now, but when I do, I will definitely post! Can't wait to see all the other tips! |

I will have to try that, I have a hard time getting the nose mustaches to lay down. Nancy |
When I feed the boyz their soft food it's cold so I put it on their plates and warm it in the microwave for 9 seconds and it's perfect. At night before we lay on the couch together I throw their blanket in the dryer for a few minutes to warm it up...they love that! Our first Yorkie, Boog, didn't like his feet to be messed with so I had a hard time trimming his nails for a long time but I found that if I laid him on his back on my lap I could trim his nails with no trouble. |
This one might seem mean but it is the only way to brush chewy's teeth! I have to hold the hair on the side of his mouth... He is learning that if he doesn't pull it won't hurt... But he doesn't like it...BUT HIS TEETH ARE CLEAN! (I sit on the floor or the couch when I do this!!) |
Heres another nail trimming tip...smear some cream cheese or any type of cheese or peanut butter on your counter and trim the nails while the dog frantically tries to lick up the treat. |
When we went to puppy school, we used hand signals. WE used sign languge to teach chewy sit, stay, and come. Now when Aubrey's deaf friend comes to visist she can tell chewy to sit and he will! (We are still working on come big time...Stay isn't working out real good either!) But he does sit real well!!!! It is very cool! |
When my babies come in from outside and its been snowing or its really cold, I always have their towels in the dryer warming up, so when they come in, they have nice warm towels to warm up in! I also do this for their baths!!! I also have baby wipes for my babies for after they go poopoo or peepee....Just the thought of them wanting to lay on me after they have....always gave me the....eeeewwwwsssss......so I always wipe their tooshies and their wee wees to make sure they are nice and clean! Just knowing they are cleaned when they sleep on me makes me feels soooo much better! LOL!!!!! |
I use a cat nail cutter to cut Chewy's nails...I also use a muzzle because he hates the nails being cut and he tries to bite!!! He is getting better though...:D |
when sasha wouldnt eat i would make plane or train sounds and pretend the fork was flying and low and behold she would eat it:D zac wont let the vet clip his nails he goes mad flipping off the table and biting but he will now let me do it and is really good, i use to put him on his back on my lap and after i cut one id tell him what a good boy he was and lift him up and give him a treat, i did the same after each nail, and after doing that a few times i stopped giving him the treat after each nail and only gave him it after i done them all, hes good as gold now when im doing them but still wont let the vet lol:D |
After Chewy got neutered, he was given this gross liquid medication that he would not eat...So i dripped it on small peices of bread and spred chicken baby food on it and he had the best little snack tray in his life once a day till the meds were gone!!! it really worked well. |
These are some really great tips. I read on another thread to put pantyhose/ kneehigh's on dog's paw allowing the nails to poke through. This pulls the hair back making it easier to cut the nails. |

My best tip is playing the game "trade". Bailey is really bad for finding things she shouldn't have and running away withthem. When I tried to come after her, she would hide under the bed. One day, she took something out of the trash and started to run. I said in a playful voice "Bailey trade" and went to her treat bag. She brought me the garbage, dropped it took her treat and went off happy. We now always play the trade game in those situations. |
I do the same thing with Joey, but have used the word "cheerio". I like the idea of using the word "trade" instead. It's great because I don't have to chase him around the house when he gets something bad. Nancy |

Same thing with mine except I ask if they want a treat. Immediately they drop it. Must be a yorkie thing. |
They are just too smart!! |

Chewy comes up to me and chewy's really wide like he has to show me he had something!!! Then we are on! I try getting him to come and there is just NO WAY... so he goes for the treat. The new thing is I have to throw a treat to let him see what yummy treat it is.. then I get him to come with another one! Little stinker! |
Take your dog on a 3-4 mile walk. Rosie behaves a lot better when we consistently take her on walks. Right now she is so exhasted that she is sleeping right next to me. If I don't take her on walks then she won't let me be on YT:) |
I agree exercise really helps. If you can't take a long walk, I found that Joey loves to play chase the dust mop. He can get a lot of exercise without wearing me out. Another tip, I took a pack of receiving blankets when picking up Joey. The breeder rubbed each blanket on the Joey's mother (I hate calling her a bitch), I kept the blankets in a plastic bag to keep the scent, giving Joey one for his bed. After washing a blanket, I just put it in the bag with the others and took out a "scented" one. I think this helped Joey adapt to his new home. When he goes to the vet to be fixed, I plan to put a blanket with my scent in his carrier. Dog's noses are like our eyes and ears. Nancy P.S. Any tips on remembering heartworm medication? Taking good photos? |
1 Attachment(s) For good pictures.....what I do is put one of their treats on my camera....and they know they have to sit pretty for their teat! LOL! So when I take their picture, it looks like they are looking into the camera, but in reality, they are looking at that darn treat! LOL! But hey...it works! Works like a charm every time! YAY! |
Remembering heartworm medication? Quote:
Nancy .... I give Toto's heartworm medication on her birthdate, i.e., the 18th! I habitually forgot until I started doing this, now I always remember the 18th of every month!! ;) |
