Cry It is over...

My baby is dead.
My name is Amanda, I am 18 years old, and I live at home with my parents. Not even a year ago, I brought home our family's first dog ever... How could I resist? Her name was Macey and she was so perfect for us.
My mom was never an animal person, but it didn't take her long to fall in love with Macey. Suddenly I wasn't the only mommy that Macey had. She would sleep in my mom's bed one night, and mine the next. We fell in love with her and she quickly became one of the most important things in my (and my mom's) life.
I work a lot over the summer and I knew Macey would be lonely, so I brought home a cat who I named Boston, and he became Macey's best friend. They were seriously so cute. They would sleep/play/do everything imaginable together. I really regret not taking pictures, because I didn't know that their relationship would soon come to and end.
This morning, my mother took them both to the vet's to get neutered/spayed. Well, only an hour later we received a call saying that Macey's heart had stopped as soon as she was anesthetized. I can't believe it. My baby is gone.
I don't really understand. Apparently this was the first time in 30 years that this has happened to my vet. I don't know how to feel about that. This was the first time we ever went to him. He is pretty respected in my area, and he works from his home. He travels to his client's homes for routine procedures, and performs surgeries in his home. Now that my baby is dead, I am questioning his methods. But maybe I am just trying to blame someone. According to our friend (a vet turned people doctor,) this kind of thing happens sometimes.
Please leave me advice. I don't know where to go from here. I never asked my breeder any questions about a health guarantee, and I have a feeling that wouldn't matter in this situation, anyway. Also, (yes it is early to be thinking about this) do I get another dog? It would be really tough to replace Macey...
Thank you all for reading/caring.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss! It must be terrible! I would give myself time before getting another dog. My thought and prayers are with you and your family.

I am wondering who your vet is? I see where you are located and I know a vet who is long standing and like you described, and I would never go back to!!!!!

Welcome to YT. I am so terribly sorry for your awful loss! How scary to lose one under anastesia. (sp) yes, it can happen. When it does its one of the worst things in the world. I'm very very sorry for the loss of Macey. I would say get another. Wait until you think you're ready, don't rush it. It wouldn't be replacing Macey, it would be honoring her. It would be that she gave you so much joy and love, that you just can't stand to not have it anymore. We lost a yorkie in May, and we got another one about 3 weeks later. Tucker has really helped to mend our hearts, but Bandit will always have his special place. I don't know about anyone else, but the links didn't work for me. If you want you can email me pictures at meganshook48@yahoo.com and I'd be more than happy to resize them and post them for you. Just let me know, again welcome to YT! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Macey

I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts so badly, I know. Just be so happy that you had her for however long. I'm older now, so I know that what we never realize as young people is that every day is a gift for people and our little furbabies. Every single day is a gift.

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet during surgery is something that we have all worried about at YT. It doesn't happen often, but there is always that risk. I'm so sorry it happened to you.

Getting another pet would be great medicine. It won't replace your lost one, but it will help to fill the holes left behind, and as someone else said, it would honor her memory.

HUGS to you.

I lost a dog under anesthesia once, too. It just takes time to heal. I'm so sorry for your loss. RIP Macey.

Dear Lord, such sad news. I have had a bezillion Yorkies of all sizes and ages anesthetized but I am always scared..I have used the same practice for 30+ years and I trust them. I get calls, several a year, from people who have the same experience, but I do not place a puppy with them for a while. We need to grieve for their loss and their little souls..We all deal with loss in different ways and I had to wait months to get another baby to help fill in the hole in my heart that the loss of my Jesse left..
When you are ready to select another vet please contact Yorkie owners in your area and see who they have faith in. Interview the vet. Make sure they are fully trained in anesthetizing a toy breed. Also, the studies that they do before surgery are so important...There are certain anesthesias and techniques of administration that must be used with toy breeds.
Our prayers are with you during this sad time..We grieve with you...Rainbow Bridge has again become a very busy crossing...

I am so sorry ...I can tell how much Macey meant to you and your mother and she died way too young.

You have given us an opportunity to reiterate to everyone that spaying and neutering are risky surgeries and should not be undertaken routinely and without a good reason. I am sure you were advised tht spaying was the best thing to do for Macey's long term health which is what most vets will tell you. I disagree as do most homeopathic vets.

If a decision is made that it is in the pet's best interest to alter you must choose the vet very carefully as the anesthesia is risky and the proper type needs to be used, the proper equipment needs to be used, there must be someone monitoring the vitals and the anesthesia while the doctor performs the durgery as some vets try to save costs by doing both themslves and there is no way to operate and monitor vitals too.

If you would like to learn more and want to determine if this vet may have been negligent, PM me as I would love to help you in any way I can.

Dear Amanda, I am so very sorry to hear about Macey. May the Lord comfort you and your mother at this time. We know what you are going through. We was BLESSED with our Cassie for ten and half years and then lost her on Nov. 5th. It was a hard rough night for me and I am having such difficulty with it all but I just keep trusting in the Lord to help me deal with her loss. My husband has Progressive Parkinsons and he was so attatched to her, like myself. She was such comfort to the both of us. She was my support. We are looking for another yorkie now, however I know it will take awhile to get one as they seem to be so highly priced at the present, but I am believing the Lord knows our needs for another and he will direct us to one. Amanda the only comfort I can begin to feel in the loss of Cassie is knowing that God Blessed us by bringing her into our lives and our loss was giving her back to Him. I truley believe that God has a very special place for our pets and I know your Macey is there with Cassie and everyones precious pets. God Bless You and know that this is typed with sincerity from the both of us. Patti and Jack
