Thank you for all the loving replies. Tears ran down my face as i read them. The owners of the dog said they would pay for the medical bills and I am hoping they keep their word. I was praying to God today and told him how I wish I could just wake up, that this would all be a very bad dream and not reality. I have cried so much, I hurt so badly. I never would have thought this would happen. I remember taking him with us to petsmart the day after we got him, a lady came up to me and said "oh my goodness, I remember when my baby was this small. Now she's 16 years old and all blonde." I imagined Charlie with us for 16 years, to be an old puppy. Always my puppy. I miss him so very much. Everywhere I go in my house, I am reminded of him. I can't look at pictures of him without feeling torn. We have tons of them. I miss my baby terribly.

OMG I am in tears. I'm sure this is unimaaginable for you and your family. At least the big dog"s family is taking some responsibility, but animal control needs to know about this dog and his off-leash life. This attack could have included your darling little nephew as well.

Certainly it will take time for the healing to begin and for you to revel in your memories of Charlie. You have my prayers!

Your story reminded me that our tiny babies are so vulnerable and a tragedy can happen in the blink of an eye. May you take comfort in all the wonderful memories and pictures you have with Charlie. I agree with taking the dog's owners to court for the vet bills, and for money to purchase another baby (when you're ready). It won't bring Charlie back, but it COULD make those people think twice about letting their dog run around off-leash ever again. A stupid little citation won't do that, they'll just pay the small fine, but if they have to come up with a substantial amount of money, court ordered, maybe it will open their eyes.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss, and for the obviously traumatic way that it happened. Thank you for your reply. I am so sorry for you loss of little Starr, I know how traumatic that is. The owners said they would pay half the bills next week and I hope they keep their word and pay the rest as well. The day Charlie was attacked, their 11 year old son was walking her. He should have never been allowed to be out with her at all by himself. That dog is too big and strong for him to handle. The leash didn't stop her from dragging the boy and killing my puppy. I am angry, broken and in disbelief.

I avoided getting a dog for so long because I remembered how hard it was to lose a pet as a kid. I finally came around to thinking, "it will be ok, I can do this." Charlie opened up my heart all over again. He made me open up again. We would play together like kids. Rolling around the floor together, hiding behind walls and jumping out at him. He used to get a kick out of that, he would run around so fast with his little butt tucked in and ears pulled back. I would say he was a little greyhound. I really felt God loving me through him sometimes. I really did. He was so precious to me.
