i really regret sending him away like that & should have dished out the cash. At the time of making my decision, i was looking at it from a financial point of view.

Me & my fiance will move on & get another puppy down the line. This time, we'll get the proper insurance.

We should have gotten insurance to begin with, but you never think of the worst case scenario until it actually happens.
You bring up an important point, and I'm so glad you have learned from this experience. That's one of the reasons Yorkietalk is so valuable, we can learn from other people's experiences. By the way, for others reading this, there is a link with financial aid, and there is also something called Credit Care, that offers interest free financing for a couple of years. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...vet-bills.html

Do any of us know exactly what we will do in an emergency situation? Why automatically do some of you assume your going to do the right thing? Have you planned out your life so much that you are ready for any obstacle to come your way? Don't be so quick to say well, this is what I would of done. You have had time to think about it. When your in the emergency, you don't have time to think, they need an answer now. So you can imply you know what YOU would do, but you would be surprised if you were in his same situation.

YES I do know what I would do in an emergency situation. I would do what ever it takes to save their lives. IF I could not come up with the cash, I'd turn to a credit card (which I have for emergency situations). My little ones mean the world to me, they bring me happiness and love. Sure that happiness and love CAN be duplicated by many, many 'new' little ones, but I chose my two, and I am committed to caring for them the BEST way I can. If that means paying off bills from their care for the rest of my life (which I am already doing) than I would find a way to make it work.

I have cared for and taken in a handful of Rescue's as well, and I am friendly with a certain Yorkie Rescue in this area, I know their mission and how they work and operate, and as much as it would hurt me until the day I died, IF for some reason I could no longer care for mine, I would want them to live on in a happy and loved home, and I would be sooooooooo THANKFUL 'if' I was given that opportunity to give my guys a better life than I could provide.

If a Vet told me that I could surrender rather than PTS b/c I couldn't afford the bills, there would be NO DOUBT in my mind....I WOULD NEVER EVER PTS just because I couldn't pay for their care and because I didn't want someone else to adopt them. That is very selfish....

Spanky was offered a second opportunity at an extremely high cost... I mean really high. If you have it like that, which I don't, then you can make congenial decisions in life.

Secondly, the doc said Spanky will never be the same after the surgery, so why would I have my buddy live his precious life in pain. I'd rather him live a life where he able to roam without getting injured.

Lastly, did I ask you have pity on me? NO!
Understand where I am coming from before making judgement.
TLC,
Read carefully. He DIDN"T have the money up front. He had to have that even if he was to relinquish his rights to him to a rescue.

Im glad you have a credit card that you are able to use. Not everyone is that fortunate.

Also I would like to add this is a very very good reason to get pet insurance.
I feel this OP's pain. His baby is gone because of a decision he felt he had no other way out of.

You don't have to agree with his decision, to show compassion and understanding.

Unfortunately, if I were faced in that situation, I would have to do the same thing. $2,500 to reliquish your animal is a lot of money. I honestly only have $60 in cash and no money in my bank account. I'm not eligible for care credit or any other credit card. I know no one that I could borrow money from. If I wouldn't have to pay such a high price, I would be more than willing to give up my animal to save his/her life and in fact I have had to do it at the beginning of this year, but I wouldn't have been able to pay the price either. I would have no choice. For those of you getting upset, I understand, but at the same time, you are not him and you were not in his situation and yes, the decision would haunt me for the rest of my life. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have large bank accounts.

Yes, I have read each word that was written, and I have said what I have said based on that.

As far as a credit card, You asked what we would do in an Emergency Situation, and that was my response....

The internet is filled with MANY MANY last resorts ~ Just because the Vet wanted $2500 to relinquish him, doesn't mean that a rescue wouldn't have taken him in ASAP - no charge, no questions asked....

I would not give up until there was truly no where else to turn....
BUT as you all say, that's ME and what I would do....

RIP Spanky

I love Spanky in every way possible. I cooked for him everyday & didnt feed him dog food. We played countless hours together with his favorite toys & went on extremely long walks in prospect park. Spanky received nothing but the best from me. So please do not question my ability to take care of my dog. God rest his soul.

Also, when your paying off for a school loan & watching your money go to flames in the market, you've got to face reality & say to yourself "I can't afford to do this".

Some of you need a serious reality check & I hate the fact that i'm explaining myslef to people i dont even know.

Peace out
This is where he mentioned it.

There has just been so much hostility and VERY judgmental people on this board lately. Things that you shouldn't even be judging someone on. Don't knock someone else until you've walked in their shoes.

But the thing is, what time of night/day was it. I could understand being able to find a shelter/rescue during the day, but if this was after about 5 P.M. there might not be any rescues open to take him.
