| Spay Incision Questions I have another question or two. Thanks for being so patient ladies (and gents). Please look at Baby's incision picture in this link (at bottom of this message) (I hope you don't mind me using your pic Baby Fidgette). I don't have a digital camera so this will have to do. Ellie's incision is four inches long (so it looks slightly longer than Baby's). Ellie has about 20 staples. The vet had to do a huge incision because she needed to get to Ellie's liver. I don't know why she closed with staples but it might have had something to do with getting out of anesthesia faster. One of the staples was coming out so I called the vet. She said it is fine if one or two come out since there are so many of them. Now by the top of the incision it is a bit red. I guess we will watch to make sure it doesn't get redder. I am seeing about 15 very tiny dots of blood on Ellie's onesie. Is this normal? They are close to the top where she is pink/red. The vet did say (when I called her about the staple coming out) that if I had any concerns call. Does the slight redness and blood dots sound normal? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...=spay+incision

| All the girls I've had spayed have had suture, but they have all had a bit of redness towards the ends of their incisions. I don't recall any blood, but the staples may irritate the skin more than sutures do. Hope everythng is okay with her!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | The incision needed to be that big because basically they prep'd her for an exploratory which is any abdominal surgery. The incision needs to be longer in case something happens they will be able to get to everything they need to with ease. Staples are used to get out of surgery faster if the patient is small, the surgery was long, the patient wasn't doing well, or, lets face it, the surgeon was being lazy. Its ok if one or two come out as long as they aren't right next to each other and the incision doesn't look like its opening up. It may be red and irritated because she's rubbing against it while laying down, or the clothes are rubbing it, or she is scratching or licking at it. You may not see her do this, but believe me, they do it when your not looking. If its red you can put neosporin on it. Also if you suspect her licking at it you can place bengay or vick's vapor rub around the incision not directly on it and it will deter her from licking at it. The blood may be there because she just pulled a staple out and it bled a little. if the incision is not opening up then i wouldn't be worried about taking her to the vet. just be sure no more come out and you keep her away from it.

| spaying Both incisions look normal, healing well...redness is at a minium. The best incision is a 2 in closed with surgerical glue..but it is not always possible I guess. Ellie's incision is really a big one, but in a few months it will not be noticable..best wishes |

| Yeah, she cut for the spay and while she was looking at everything in there she got the idea to do a liver biopsy so she had to lengthen her cut. I am sure Ellie isn't licking but the onesie could be rubbing. I would take it off and use an e-collar but she will rub it on blankets anyway so there would be no difference. I was just getting concerned with the redness and blood but she is probably fine. I will call tomorrow if she gets too much redder.

| When Maddie was spayed...about three or four days later I noticed blood spots on her onesie and she was also very red on one end of her incision. I took her to the vet and she had an infection in her incision and was put on antibiotics. Good thing you're taking her to the vet. Get well wishes from Maddie, Libby and I!!!

| I just talked to a tech and they are not extremely worried but it would be a good idea to see her. So 7 tonight if it doesn't get better. The incision bled a little (about 10 more dots) overnight and the staple came out a long time ago.

| I'd call. I'd rather be safe then sorry. Can you put some hydrogen peroxide on the red area?

| I would definately check with the vet. I am a post surgical nurse and we always teach not to use ointment on the incision as it might keep the wound from closing. straight hydrogen peroxide is very damaging to the skin but is great for keeping the wound clean. If you have to use it I would cut it with strerile saline or water from a pharmacy by at least 50 percent of each.. but granted.. I don't work on animals!! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | peroxide doesn't get rid of red area. its only used to clean up blood. if she has a red irritated area a triple antibiotic ointment can be used

| I just want to make sure it is nothing coming from the inside. It is unlikely but possible. I have spent over $2000 there this year so they can look at it for me. I do have panalog here (isn't that dog neosporin?). Atleast I won't have to buy any if they want me to use it.

| So, Ellie went to the vet tonight. All is fine and there is no infection. But, oye. I think we go too much. Her regular vet doesn't work on Saturdays so another vet saw her. He happens to be one of the main surgeons there. I had never met him before and he comes and and says, "So this is the infamous Ellie May". I guess Ellie's vet consulted with him before she spayed her. We really need to give them a break.
