Linus has been on Heartguard since he was 4 months for heartworm. They just put him on it when he got his last set of shots. Another way to prevent it is by buying one of those 4-1 "flea" collars. They cover fleas, flea eggs, ticks, and repel mosquitos. That is definately a personal decision because of the harms associated with a collar on our babies, but it should be ok to put on just when you go outside as long as you don't attach a leash to it.
