Do I need to worry about mosquitoes?
 
I was outside and noticed that there are lots of mosquitoes out. Do I need to worry about Keeley getting bit? Is there such thing a bug spay for dogs/puppies?

I think this is what heartworm medicine is for, because mosquitos transmit heartworm.

I'm just wondering how likely it is for a dog to get heartworm. My family has had dogs through the past who never got a monthly heartworm pill, and all of those dogs have been quite healthy.

All of a sudden, it's the year 2000 and vets are warning me to give this medicine to Otis every month to prevent it.

I'm not too keen on giving my dog a monthly heartworm pill when no one I've ever known in CA ever had a heartworm problem. I want to know if it's really necessary to do this.

I heard Avon makes a skin cream that mosquitos absolutey detest the smell of. It's called "Skin-so-soft" and it should be okay to put a little on your dog.

I would not use skin so soft. It has a sorta oily base and your dogs coat wil be a mess cause dirt and everything else will stick to it. And dogs should not be bathed every day. Mosquito bites do not react on dogs like they do on humans. If you were to see yor feller scratching, it would be either fleas or ticks.
AND, YES, it is important to use a heartworn preventative... it does not have the same action as other vaccines. It kills any larvae that has formed in your dog's body due to bites in the PAST 30 days. I would get him tested and if the test is neg. start on heartgard or any other product your vet recommends..
Other chemicals can be toxic including some that are found in SSS...from Avon. Might not be good for the dog to lick it off..

^^Sorry. I didn't mean to recommend something that I don't even own. I just read it on the internet.

If there were all these mosquitos floating around, and I was worried about my dog getting bit, I really didn't see the harm in dabbin a little SSS behind my Yorkie's ears for a quick fix.

Anyway, it's ultimately up to you.

Yes, you sure do need to worry about them. That is particularly why we use heartworm preventitive. Please see you vet about a blood test and then get them on a heartwormer as soon as you can.

Oh, he has been taking the heartworm preventitive. I had no idea that is what that was for. :rolleyes:

Are you talking to me? Otis IS on a heartworm plan. He gets a pill the first of every month.

My point was, growing up, we had many many many dogs in our family, and we have NEVER given any of them heartworm pills, and they all turned out fine. I don't even think the vet recommended the pills to my parents.

And now that I have my own dog, it seems like there are so many medications and stuff we need to give our dogs all the time, like Advantage. BUt then again, we didn't have Advantage back when I was living w/ my parents

I"m not saying it's not important.

I just took Chewy to the vet and asked about the heartworm pill. She said it was important yes, but that Chewy should not start for another 2 months and I can't remember why :confused: Is there a minimum age to take the meds?

It seems like heartworm is more prevalent on the East Coast than the West Coast, accoreding to the chart. Maybe that's why it wasn't recommended to my parents back in the day.

MIne started wtih the heartworm pill and frontline at 8 wks.

If you are already on a heartwormer, then you are fine. These little 'skeeters' bite us and our babies and carry lots of disease. For dogs it is heartworms and you sure don't want your baby to get that!! Here in Missouri, we have big mosquitos and lots of them. My vets suggests we use heartwormer for at least 9 months of the year.

Not only do you have to worry about heartworms, but west nile is there now. Of course you need to be worried about it. Check with your vet to find the best method for your area.

Yeah, from the DrsFosterandSmith site, it looks like hardly ANY instances of heartworm in WA state. Also, I finally found the thread in which we discussed the heartworm only being in the Midwest/East Coast here:

Some vets around here don't even recommend heartworm medication...
