Why was the Yorkies created? And why breed them?

Most dogs are not being used as working dogs any longer although some still do. As for the yorkie, the standard today is far from the original yorkie that was bred to hunt rats. Those yorkies were larger and didn't have the long, silky coat that our yorkies of today have. But eventually an actual standard was written and of course has changed some over the years to what it is today. For most breeds, the reason to breed is to meet that written standard of confirmation. There are some dogs bred as working dogs (ex. hunting dogs, field-working dogs, herding dogs, tracking dogs, sledding dogs) that prove themselves worthy to be bred by excelling in their work. They may not necessarily be comformationally perfect but come from a line of great working dogs so they are bred as working dogs. For instance, huskies bred for sledding do not necessarily look like the huskies being shown in conformation. Anyway, back to yorkies - our yorkies don't work any longer so they are bred for conformation.

OK...well Bailey WAS proud and he was standing there saying "mamma, take my picture" ... so she did! AND it IS just a wild rabbit for crying out loud!!!

I agree...it wasn't like she went out and bought a rabbit and let her dog kill it. This is part of life. This is what dogs did in the wild for food and this is why my dog eats a raw diet. My dog eats rabbit and venison as her meat source. Our yorkies were bred to have a high prey-drive and I know mine still does. You should see how crazy she acts if she spots a rabbit, frog, lizzard, bird, etc on our walk. She'd kill a rabbit too if she was able to catch one.

It's a dog bred to hunt things like this and it caught a bunny and killed it...that's what dogs do. This discussion reminds me of the people that protest trapping and releasing feral cats because they kill birds...um...it's a cat and a carnivore..killing birds and things is what they do... it's life!

actually, yes this thread is about yorkies doing what they were originally bred to do. And thats exactly what she posted a pictures of: her yorkie doing what it is "suppose" to do.

If the truth be told..the CAT brought the bunny in the fence and Bailey got it.. there was NO getting it off of him.. I tried.
