Could my dog be allergic to Frontline...help? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

My poor little girl is scratching like crazy. I treated her with Frontline this morning and was concerned about this. At least two other times when I used this (and it is the only flea product I have ever used) she seemed to get a rash close to the time I applied. The timing wasnt exact and actually the first time it happened when she got hives, I wasnt sure if I had treated her before or not. The second time I had treated her about 3 days before. I have treated her a few other times though when I know she didnt have a problem. Is it likely she is allergic to this product? If she is, what can I use? Or, if she had some fleas (not that I could find any) would she itch more as the product began to work?

Yes, it's possible she's allergic to it. My Mom purchased Biospot from Petsmart once (another flea product) and put it on her yorkie. He started scratching like crazy and gave himself a hot spot where the liquid was applied. He had to go to the vet twice for it. She uses Revolution on him now and hasn't had a problem. I would try another flea product next time and see if that doesn't make her itch - like Advantage or Revolution

I agree, I would ask your vet. I know that we have never had that problem, but maybe a bath would help?? and just try to get it off as much as possible??

This is just my opionion, but, I would use something holistic. I have 2 schnauzers besides our little yorkie and about a yr. ago I put Frontline on my oldest girl. Within an hour, she could not walk. I said then, I would never ever put any more chemicals on them. Maybe like someone said, bathing might help some. Good luck, these little babies are so little and my schnauzer was overweight at about 19 to 20lbs. and it hurt her.

Consult your vet on a different preventative, animals can be just like people in regards to senstive/allergic skin.

Yes, it is definitely possible. These flea prevention products are full of chemicals...

Yes she could be allergic to it, My friends Yorkie spent may weeks in the hospital and could not walk or move after treating her baby with this flea meds. She almost lost her.

It's likely she is allergic to it, as you stated the itching starts after you put it on her. I'd ask your vet for something else to try.

....I would try to find something holistic too........cause when you think about it if all these products "kill" fleas then they are all some type of poison.....so I don't think I would consider it an allergy....just a reaction to poison....keep your baby as healthy as possible because fleas tend to go after the most vulnerable victims.....if you're going to ask your vet make sure he is open minded to natural stuff because he'll probably just recommend frontline or advantage cause that's what they sell....

Educate yourself and buy from reputable breeders or rescue.
