This is how I sort of see it.. Lets say there is a new Chevie and Cadillac for sale. The Chevie is nice but the testing is not being done as I would like and they cut corners to keep the price down. The Cadillac has the best of everything and I know I am getting the best the people can manufacture. I look at my pocket book and I find I can only afford the Chevie but I love the Cadillac. Am I supposed to expect the Cadillac company to lower their quality and standards so I can buy one:confused: |

Ok...I just had a litter 5 weeks ago and so far it has cost me over 1000. That's with the vet visits before they were born and the ones after. But, it is worth it to insure that all are healthy...Mother and babies...I have not even figured in the time I have lost from work or the sleepless nights because they were so litttle when they were born that I was affraid that they would not be able to nurse from the mother. And I am only at week 5 I still have about 7 to go. I paid a lot for both mother and father. To be honest they have been worth every penny and then some. (Alot more than my Husband said I could...LOL) I have decided that who ever purchases my new babies will have to sign a contract that if they at any point can not take care of this baby it is to come back to me. (I signed the same contract with my breeder.)These are and will always be my babies I have put alot of time, sweat and tears into these beautiful babies. I love them. They are spoiled more than my human babies...or so I am accused. I do not plan to just give one of my babies to just any one. If they are not willing to pay for them then they more than likely will not see the need to take them to the vet for regular visits or heaven forbid if they were to get sick or hurt. |

My contract says the same. Once you breed you understand. |
If you can't afford to pay $1000-$3500 up front for the dog, what are you going to do if your dog has an expensive emergency? Just today I heard of a dog that tore it's Cranial Cruciate Ligament and it ended up costing over $5000 to repair it and treat infection that set in. I'm so tired of seeing pet owners put their dogs/cats to sleep, rehome them, or not get them the treatment they need because of the excuse "I can't afford it." What if your dog is hit by a car and has several broken bones, develops cancer and needs expensive chemo, needs a $2000 Luxating Patella surgery?? Most vets, especially emergency vets, require full payment at the time of service. It's just not fair to the dog to bring it into your life if you don't have the money to take care of it. Owning a puppy can be very expensive at first - rounds of vaccinations, spaying/neutering, initial pet supplies that need to be bought. True the every-day costs of food and vet care are spread out over time and don't seem like you're paying a lot, but again, what if the dog gets sick or hurt? If you bring a dog into your life, it's your responsibility to take care of that dog and give it the care it needs no matter what the cost is. My opinion is if you can't afford to pay that initial price of the puppy, you can't afford to own the puppy just because like I said, emergencies happen, and you need to have money to pay for them if they do. And so far as "Poor" people not being able to afford a yorkie, too bad! If they are that poor, they don't need to be bringing ANY pet into their life because they can't afford it. If that makes me a snob, I'm sorry...but I'm thinking about the welfare of the animals here. It's not fair of them to not get treatment because their owner can't afford it. I get sick sick sick of seeing people saying things like this: "I think my puppy might have a broken leg. She won't walk on it. What can I do? I can't afford to take her to the vet." Well, you know what...you brought that puppy into your life and it's your responsibility to take care of it! I think the prices reputable breeders set help protect their puppies and where they go. If someone can pay for the puppy, most likely they'll be able to afford anything that the dogs ends up needing. |

I disagree that you have to have a lot of money to have a pet. I think there's a difference in people that don't have money. There's the people who don't have a lot of money but have the common sense to take care of their pets and some plan in their head as to what they would do for an emergency. Then you have the yahoos that have no common sense, along with no money and make those 'I think my dog is seriously injured' posts and won't take them to the vet. I grew up with nothing. No extra money, none of the luxuries that everyone else had. We never had cable, didn't have phone until I was in high school. But that doesn't mean we didn't 'deserve' to have animals because we were poor. A lot of my happy times as a child were with one of our pets. |
These toughts are JUST MY OPINIONS! Okay.. I agree that you need to have money saved for emergency and I agree that if you want 'that' dog and it is a certain price then pay it or go somewhere else,,, But you don't need to save a 'whole bunch' of maoney just to show that you can take care of a dog.. I guess thousands of people wouldn't have there dogs if that is the case... And I don't really see how anyone can compare if you can pay this price then you can more than likely be responsible to take care of a dog (nobody has said that but people keep mentioning that if you can't pay blah blah for the dog then you more than likely can't spend blah blah for emergency) .. To me the price for a dog has nothing to do with the price for vet/emergency... And... I forgot what I was going to say so when I think of it I will post it ...:D ) |
