I will say right out that I don't believe in microchips for ethical reasons. You would think though that all vets would check for one. We had taken Ellie to a farm vet when she was a pup. We started going to a big vet office and they never checked her at all. They didn't take her in the back either. So most vets don't check.

I think all vets should check!!!!!!!!! I would not be offended if my vet who knows I have 7 yorkies scanned everyone everytime I went in. I have mine micro chipped too because if they ever do get lost or stolen I hope sometime they would get scanned and I would get my Dog back. My first yorkie was stolen twice and I got her back both times.

may I ask you what those "ethical" reasons are?
what could be wrong with placing a microchip for ID purposes?

Horses are branded and that is for ID purposes as well ...

I don't think it is natural to put something like that in them. I would never brand an animal either. I think having an ID tag on their collar helps out ton... I think it is a personal choice... It is one I choose not to do tho.

It is just my personal choice. I don't think it is right to put any chip into any living thing. I am sure it has started/will start with humans soon and I don't agree with the practice. If a scanner can read it I guess the chip is some sort of "computer" because I don't know what else you'd call it. My dog is not a robot.

The only thing that the chip has in it is a number programmed in it. When the scanner scans the chip, the number comes up on the screen of the scanner. You must then look up the chip number in the computer system to get the dog's information. It's not used for any kind of tracking purpose or control purposes or anything.

They are already putting microchips in some people. It's not very common though. The purpose is so that when you go to the doctor or hospital, your chip is scanned and all your medical history can be found. It's just used to get medical information which could safe a person's life in an emergency, especially if there was no identification on the person.

If it helps anyone get medical attention faster
and locate people related to the dog or person quicker, I am all for it.

GPS chips are another thing entirely ...

although I'd like the "lo Jack" feature in my pups as long as it is not a carcinogen ...or harmful to the pup.

Coby was microchipped while being neutered. When getting his stitches removed, I had the vet scan him in front of me and show me the code did come up correctly. I haven't validated that my information is in the PetTrac database correctly yet, but plan to. But even if that gets messed up, the original code goes back to the chipper. So my vet would be contacted.

I had the vet scan him in front of me for two reasons: to make sure that I knew it worked, and to make the vet realize, that since I bothered with it, how important microchipping was to me. I plan to ask him to scan Coby each time partly for me and partly to increase the vet's use of the scanner.

I'm sure that scanner use will increase. A courtesy call to Lewis' vet may prompt him to either get the correct equipment or encourage him to scan new pets going forward.

And I believe that they have the multi-chip scanners that read all the chips. They are just more expensive.
