What everyday dangers lurk?

Yeah, that one freaks me out too. My MIL has dropped pills before. Thankfully, they haven't eaten any to my knowledge.

That's one of my fears. I take my birth control pills every morning and I've accidentally dropped them on the floor a couple times. Once I was having a lot of trouble finding one I dropped and I finally found it in Lacy's crate (which is right beside my bed and nightstand)...she wasn't in there but it freaked me out when it was taking me a while to find it. I've heard that dogs can die by eating one?

I'm also scared that her leash might slip through my hand and that she'll get hit by a car. And that someone will break in my house and steal her or that someone will steal her from me while I'm walking her or shopping with her.

I guess I'm always afraid I'm going to loose her. My family didn't have very good luck with pets when I was a kid so I'm always afraid something is going to happen to mine now.

I think all Yorkie owners tend to be paranoid, for good reason! I'm also afraid of sitting on Jack. He's only 4 pounds, and he likes to hide under blankets. My Mom told me years ago that she was haunted from her childhood when she sat on and killed a cat.

that is a good warning too. I am constantly on my husband to keep his meds under control. .... he not only drops a lot of them but he has a bad habit of not getting the caps back on tight enough. he is diabetic (takes 2 shots a day along with pills, and more pills for high blood pressure, more pills for this and that and the other, etc.)
the way Ahia runs for things that are droped scares me to death sometimes.

Here's mine, and it happened yesterday.

Elevators. Three of us hopped on an elevator with both dogs on leash. The dogs were a little jumpy in the strange surroundings. My wife was holding Eddie's leash. I had Jack's. Someone hit the up button and Eddie panicked at the same time and was heading for the open door. For a split second, I was mortified. I could picture him leaping out the door just as it closed on the leash. Who knows what would have happened. In a state of panic, could I have found the STOP button before it went up? Would the door have automatically opened because a small leash was caught? Or would the leash have become trapped on our side while Eddie was trapped on the other?

I may have been worrying for nothing, but from now on I'm picking up both dogs in elevators. Too scary.

That is exactly what happened to one of my girl friend's Cocker Spaniel. She somehow ran out, the elevator door closed and leash caught and the elevator went up. The elevator door will not automatically open because a leash was caught. So my friend was inside, her dog was outside and her dog was badly injured and sent to ER which was 10 minutes away. The vet said her chances were slim but after a long time in the hospital, she made it. Scary.

My biggest fears are the hawks and eagles taking lacey away. i have seen the hawks circle the yard and once lacey was crying to get out of her pen outside and the crying attracted an eagle. the thought of her being picked up and flown away is scarry. i sometimes wonder if some of the missing dog have had this happen.

Years ago my ex mil was doing laundry and her persian jumped in the dryer and she didn't find him until it was too late . My pups love to climb in the clothes when I seperate them to do the wash and I always double check the washer and dryer before I turn them on.

Ugh, I was secretly hoping my fears were unfounded. It's horrible to hear this is really a possibility. I will definitely always pick them up on elevators from now on.

I'm glad you posted this. I have never had the monkeys around elevators because there isn't anywhere we go that would require it but if I ever do I will think about this post.

The one everyday danger that really used to freak me out is Simon's little interest in licking outlets. I don't know why he does it or when he started but one day I saw him doing it and it scared me to pieces. I now have the plastic baby plugs in all outlets within his reach.

Yeah, that too! I was just at my mom's and she commented one evening "oh, I must have dropped a Lasix (diuretic) on my bedroom rug this morning".... Max loves to hang out on the carpet in her bedroom and he picks up EVERYTHING that isn't nailed to the floor . Luckily, he missed that! Something big they might not be interested in b/c most pills don't taste all that good, but something small like a Lasix or Valium or lots of blood pressure pills they'd probably have in their mouth and swallowed before they realized it didnt' taste good.

That's my fear too. I also worry about weed killers and pesticides that people might put on their property when I'm out walking her. She's so small I'm afraid she could get sick if it gets on her feet or eats grass of whatever.

Great thread...and very interesting. I don't have elevators to worry about...but I do worry about the garage door. Ours does not have the sensor on it, so I always carry him out the door, so there's no chance he'll run back under the door and get squished...

I have to warn you guys about big dogs too. I had a bad experience, made my heart jump out. We were walking towards the beach and we saw this couple with 3 big dogs going the opposite direction. Then all of the sudden 1 dog got loose and started sniffing my yorkie before I could get him the other dogs followed and one that looks like a pitbull mix grabbed my dog and bit him by the neck and started to shake him around. I was like OMG!! So I grabbed my dog from the other dogs mouth and put him as high as I can by holding him up. The lady keep saying I'm so sorry and her husband just took off with the other two. He didn't even say anything. But man, I was so scared.

Ya it scared my friend so bad that she moved out. Her dog spent like a good few weeks in the vet . She even said she tried to push the stop/emergency button multiple times and it didn't work-not sure if its malfunction or it just doesn't work that way. And the elevator in the building is the kind that is programmed to go up all the way to your floor after you swap with your key fob and won't stop at any other floors and she was alone in the elevator so it went all the way up to the 49th floor where her floor is before she could come down to get her dog that was injured on the ground floor. Another thing is the gap between the elevator and the floor. I am always afraid dogs might accidentaly get their leg/paw stuck in it and the elevator will close on you after its open for some amount of time. I carry mine all the time now when we are going in and out of the elevator. Can't wait to move out of the condo into a house.
